About us
Foundations of Success (FOS) is a small, nonprofit organization committed to working with practitioners to learn how to do conservation better through the process of adaptive management. We work with other conservation organizations to help them develop adaptive management systems, facilitate cross-project and cross-site learning, and conduct monitoring and evaluation.

Foundations in Switzerland now have a powerful new tool for achieving impact at scale. Hosted by Cartier for Nature in Geneva yesterday, FOS's Nick Salafsky and Ilke Tilders presented a framework that provides a structured approach to assessing the scalability of conservation initiatives. By applying this framework, donors can make more informed decisions about where to allocate their resources and how to support grantees in achieving lasting change. Joining remotely, Dane Klinger from Conservation International shared how the Climate Smart Shrimp project has used the framework to create a solid scaling strategy. Thank you Julien Semelin for making this happen and hosting the event! The Taking Conservation to Scale framework describes five main scaling approaches and provides a decision tree to help choose which approach(es) to use in each situation. It gives guidance and tools for mapping out how the system works, clarifying the desired change, and understanding what it would take to make it happen. Today, FOS's Nick Salafsky and Ilke Tilders shared the new framework for taking conservation to scale with IUCN in Gland, Switzerland. The framework provides guidance and tools to understand the system you are operating in, define the change that needs to happen, choose which of five main scaling approaches to use, and check the feasibility of your plan. Collaboratively developed and tested with six real-world conservation programs, the framework helps you find the pathways to bring your work to scale. What are some of your favorite facilitation tools to address uncertainty when you're using the #ConservationStandards with a team?
The journey of mastering facilitation continues at EI! In our first session on Advanced Facilitation Techniques for Activity Design, participants explored tools to enhance group creativity and resilience in the face change. One of our favorite Liberating Structures exercises? Critical Uncertainties. As our partner Ash Baker at Foundations of Success noted, the Critical Uncertainties activity is a great tool to address unpredictable factors and better plan for future scenarios. This week Eva Schiffer and Samantha Levine-Finley, ACC will lead our facilitation experts in session two on Using Advanced Facilitation Techniques in Pause and Reflects to support USAID activity design and implementation. Stay tuned for insights from session two! #facilitation #liberatingstructures #ourteam https://hubs.la/Q02DcV9l0
