In his book, Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things, organizational psychologist and New York Times Bestselling author, Adam Grant, talks about the importance of prosocial skills in the workplace. Grant writes, “Prosocial skills are the glue that transforms groups into teams.” Grant even goes on to assert that we should choose leaders with prosocial skills. He says, “…elevate people who put the mission above their ego – and prioritize team cohesion over personal glory. When teams are eager to contribute, the most effective leader is not the loudest talker, but the best listener.” I think prosocial skills and prosocial behavior are unique skills that Force Multipliers, Executive Business Partners, and Chiefs of Staff tend to possess (or at the very least, they acknowledge and cultivate). And if you haven’t mastered prosocial skills yet, the good news is that they can be learned! Prosocial skills fall into the “soft skills” category, but, today, soft skills are more important than ever. They will not only be the skills and behaviors that set you apart, but what propels your career and organization to success, especially amidst emerging tech and advanced AI world that still desperately needs a human-centric leadership approach. "What specific set of challenges do you want this role to solve?" Whether you’re interviewing for a new Executive Assistant position or gearing up to pitch a Chief of Staff role at your current company, the answer to this question will give you incredible insight into how these roles are positioned and valued within the company. For example, do the powers that be want the Executive Assistant to lead strategy and ELT alignment? Or are they looking for an EA to streamline email and calendar management for the CEO? Then you get to decide if those are the problems that you want to solve, or if you want to guide them to expand their thinking about the role and show them just what a Force Multiplier can do. Perfection is subjective. But “done” is not. Not to mention, perfect never gets done (perfectionism is just another name for procrastination). When working with your leader or your team members, you must identify what “done” looks like. Otherwise, both parties may be operating on assumptions and mismatched expectations. And that’s a recipe for disaster. So the next time you assign a problem or project, get clear on what your finished product looks like.

Was Airbnb’s CEO, Brian Chesky, talking about founders and force multipliers when he said: “Sometimes it’s just hard for one person to be a unicorn, to be able to do everything, but if you could create duos, they could cover each other’s strengths. So giving people a shared journey to be on together I think is really important ... It’s a brilliant idea.” No, but he is onto something here. Pair up. Loneliness at work is still a problem, but work friendships can help. So can finding the right strategic support partner to journey through work with. So right after reading this, ask yourself: “Who’s someone at work who not only compliments my skill set with theirs but also gets me more than the others do?” Once you’ve figured that out, make an effort to work closely with them. Try it out and see what a big difference it makes. For more insights and advice for leaders and Force Multipliers, join The Inner Circle. https://buff.ly/4cGqJLi
