Don't let fear of failure be the reason for your failure. "I am a perfectionist. I want an A+ on my go-to-market." 🥇 At least 3 founders in my portfolio have said a variation of this to me just in the last one week. I work with self-identifying underestimated founders and I've noticed a trend: + they are smart, talented and kind humans + they have career achievements galore + they're used to As and promotions ➡️ Then they become a founder and getting straight As feels hard: Every decision you make would have to be right. Every test you run would have to work. Every version would be perfect. This is simply impossible. Many founders admit to me: I am afraid of marketing an imperfect product. Or, what if my idea isn't the best one out there? Deep down they fear public failure. Deeper down they know that without marketing, there are no customers, and without customers there is no business. i.e. failure is guaranteed. I know all this too well because I am one of these types of founders. Perfectionism and fear of failure was holding me back, too. That's why I created the Happy Paying Customers (HPC) methodology. (I didn't even realize this when I was creating it btw) Smart, talented founders who are perfectionists like it because it provides: + a way to articulate their hypotheses and make decisions + stop the spinning and generate momentum to execute + build confidence and clarity in what to do next The goal is to do marketing / sales in a way that feels authentic to you. And, to build a business fueled by Happy Paying Customers, on your terms. Embrace the mindset that the only F is if you do nothing. (or throw spaghetti at the wall hoping for it to stick) Learning, including invalidating a hypothesis, gets you an A+. Don't let perfectionism hold you back. You got this ✨
