As a working mom who traveled for work and exclusively breastfed my twins, I’m a passionate advocate for family-friendly workplace policies. I’ve experienced firsthand the delicate balance between parenting and professional responsibilities. Sleep—or often the lack of it—plays a crucial role in this balancing act. That’s why I’m thrilled to be hosting a fireside chat with the incredible co-founder of Happiest Baby (the maker of SNOO) and creator of the SNOO, Dr. Harvey Karp on September 12th. Integrating Digital & Engineering @ Shell | Wharton MBA Candidate | Advocate for Dual Career Parents

In honor of National Breastfeeding Month and #breastfeeding advocacy, I want to share my experiences about work travel at Shell while continuing to breastfeed my infant to raise awareness about what it takes for me personally to find balance to be successful in both. If you’re a mom, I hope you’ll recognize that many of us are navigating this journey together, and we can and should be advocating for ourselves and supporting each other. If you’re a line manager or a colleague, I hope this helps you understand the hours of planning, logistics, and behind-the-scenes work that so many moms are willing to devote to meet their personal obligations at home and to continue in their career. In September 2023, I returned to work after 5 months of leave with my second child. I travel internationally in my role and had a business trip to London in October 2023. My line manager made no assumptions on my willingness to make the trip, instead, leaving the decision to travel with me. When I stated I was excited to go, I also said I’d need flexibility to work from home more frequently to build a milk stash for my eight days away. I was more effective and efficient working from home (I could pump at my desk), but in the office, I had to step away for 25 minutes every few hours to pump. Over the next few weeks, I built a freezer stash and created an inventory system to track my supply. I navigated and planned logistics to pump on an airplane and new office, store and freeze milk, and transport my stash from overseas. In London, I quietly stepped out of meetings to take pump breaks in the lactation room. I was surprised that our London HQ has a freezer for the sole purpose of storing breastmilk! By the end, I pumped and transported 170-oz of frozen breastmilk back home.     In December 2023 and February 2024, I traveled to Bangalore. I was fortunate to have the same level of support in place to travel, pump, and transport my stash. I can’t say this is always easy – uncertainty about airport security or freezer availability, language barriers, and the constant fear of milk running out before I return home have all added to the mental load of traveling away from my baby. A supportive line manager, flexibility to work from home before a business trip, on-site lactation rooms, and Milk Stork products have all helped me to find balance with my career and breastfeeding. In 2024, working moms (and parents!) should be able to have lofty career goals without compromising on their personal convictions as it relates to raising their family. With the right support systems in place, moms can balance their careers while minimizing the challenges of continuing to breastfeed their baby at home. Comment below with questions you have on how to balance pumping at work, traveling away from baby, transporting milk, or to offer advice you want to share about this topic. I will provide my tips and hints in another post. #shell #workingmoms #breastfeeding #pumping #milkstork
