When it comes to using data, be selective. Make sure to only include numbers if they best support a larger point. Instead, spend time and effort on presenting the data more clearly. Questions to think about when doing this: -Can you rewrite a graph’s title so it tells the audience how to interpret the trend? -Can you arrange the data to clarify the story it tells? #OnFrameFriday #FramingTips #FridayFacts #FrameWorks

We conduct and share original communications research to help reframe social issues. Proud recipient of MacArthur Award
About us
The FrameWorks Institute's mission is to advance the nonprofit sector's communications capacity by conducting and translating empirical research on framing the public discourse about a variety of social problems – from health equity to criminal justice to early childhood development to climate change. Our approach is unique in that we focus on both research and application. Our research team studies public thinking on different social issues and conducts original empirical research on frame effects. Our strategy team translates those research findings and turns them into engaging learning experiences and compelling communications products so partners can build their framing capacity and immediately apply our recommendations to their own work. We are committed to collaboratively shifting the way we collectively make sense of and communicate about different social issues in our society. We aim to support advocates' efforts to advance culture and social change through policy change.

There’s a gap between how much Americans say they care about kids and what we do for them. In their latest op-ed, FrameWorks CEO Nathaniel Kendall-Taylor and Leading for Kids President David Alexander discuss how cultural mindsets influence our nation’s insufficient investment in kids—and how we can build a stronger culture around collectively caring for our nation’s children. Metaphorical language can spark new associations and understandings, prompting people to rethink their opinions or assumptions. And because metaphors give us a new mental framework for thinking and talking about a topic, they can open up dead-end conversations and repetitive debates. Example: Many communications about adolescent development start by acknowledging the risks associated with adolescence and the need to protect young people from danger, or they cite statistics about the number of young people who experience mental health challenges. Instead of using this approach, we could lead with a metaphor of adolescence as a time of exploration, when young people need to test ideas, experiment with boundaries, and be able to take and learn from safe risks. #OnFrameFriday #FramingTips #FridayFacts #FrameWorks

Join us and our partners on Monday, October 28th at 3:00 p.m. ET for a live conversation on how to address the narrative and policy dimensions of our nation’s child care system. See you there!
For many of us, we have asked the fundamental question, why is it so hard for the U.S. to make investments in its children and families. For the majority of families, they are left on their own, when we all know that the future of this country is deeply tied to the wellbeing of children and their families. Join me and my esteemed colleagues for a discussion on new research and old practices that elevate that the more we focus on our interdependence and collective care, the more we'll get to solutions that work more fairly for families. Join us on October 28, 2024 at 3pm ET. Andrew Volmert, senior vice president of research at the FrameWorks Institute David Alexander, president at Leading for Kids Erica Phillips, executive director at the The National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) Child Care Julia Sosa, parent leader representative from United Parent Leaders Action Network (UPLAN) RWJF #RWJFSocial

We often hear the phrase “You have to meet people where they are.” Although this may help us to connect, it can hurt the goal of encouraging people to view things differently. Communications need to resonate in order to work, but they should do so in a way that doesn’t lead people to fatalism or disengagement. When you start with a shared value as a point of commonality, it not only helps to connect with your audience but it opens thinking to new perspectives. EXAMPLE: When talking about health disparities, values like “equity” are often politicized or considered taboo. But leading with already-shared values like “dignity” can be a powerful and effective way of helping people better understand the health issues that affect some groups more than others. #OnFrameFridays #FramingTips #FridayFacts #FrameWorks
