About us
Freedom Project is a community-centered, Black- and Brown-led organization dedicated to dismantling systems of mass incarceration and healing the trauma they inflict on our communities. Rooted in principles of equity, empathy, and restorative justice, we work from and are directed by the communities we serve—centering the voices and needs of Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color most impacted by the criminal legal system. Our comprehensive approach includes trauma-informed care, culturally relevant mentorship, and holistic support services. We empower individuals and families through reentry navigation, gap funding for basic needs, compassionate communication training, and community healing circles. Freedom Project is also deeply committed to youth development, providing leadership opportunities and wraparound support to help young people thrive. Our work is informed by lived experience, as over 95% of our staff are justice-involved individuals who bring authentic understanding and expertise to our programs. We collaborate with local initiatives like the Regional Peacekeepers Collective to address violence prevention and work alongside system-involved youth to provide mentorship, emotional support, and opportunities for personal growth. Join us in shifting from punishment to restoration, from oppression to equity, and from apathy to empathy. Together, we are working to create a future where our communities are free, whole, and thriving.
