On Tuesday, Sierra Leone enacted a landmark law banning child marriage, a significant step towards protecting children’s rights and well-being, and preventing forced child marriages. The new legislation prohibits marriage under the age of 18, imposing strict penalties of up to 15 years in prison and $5,000 in fines on those involved. Those married as children can seek financial compensation and petition for an annulment. The law’s consequences are more extensive than those in other African countries and can set a powerful precedent for future prohibitions. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dXrzJvhs

🍫 It’s #WorldChocolateDay! There’s a day for everything and this is a day to confront the hidden hardships cocoa farmers face worldwide. Despite advancements, many farmers are unable to secure adequate or fair compensation for their cocoa, making turning to exploitation the only option aside from destitution. This systemic issue is deeply embedded in the purchasing practices of major cocoa and chocolate companies. These corporations need to take meaningful action. Paying farmers a living income is a critical step towards ending reliance on exploitation and establishing a just cocoa industry. Fair compensation for cocoa can transform lives and protect children from exploitation. We, alongside over 100 NGOs and farmer cooperatives, have issued a Call to Action for a #JustCocoaIndustry. We call upon industry leaders, organizations, and individuals to join us in demanding significant change. 🌍 To those in leadership roles within civil society organizations: Your influence is crucial. Join our movement by endorsing our Call to Action. Together, we can ensure that our appreciation for chocolate translates into fairness and justice for all involved in its production.
