Planting trees. Together.
About us
Friends of Trees inspires people to improve the world around them through a simple solution: Planting trees. Together. We need trees more than ever. Heatwaves, flooding, and all of the increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change make it clear that every day needs to be the day for climate action. Since 1989 Friends of Trees has planted 975,000+ trees and native shrubs in neighborhoods and natural areas in six counties across two states. We’ve done this through engaging tens of thousands of community members, and while implementing and growing programming that aims to do this work inclusively and equitably. We plant trees, and so much more.

Mario is making it happen in Washington County!
Just wrapped up another community tree planting with Friends of Trees in Beaverton’s West Beaverton and Highland neighborhoods, where we planted over 40 street trees! It’s inspiring to see people from all backgrounds come together to plant trees, invest in their neighborhoods, and connect with their urban forest in a tangible way. These trees will provide shade for neighbors, create habitat for wildlife, and make the community a better place to live for generations to come. Long after we’re gone, these trees will continue to grow and give back to the neighborhood. A living legacy we’re all part of! We planted some great species too including Persian ironwoods, Autumn Gold Ginkgo, Turkish Filbert, American yellowwood, Afterburner Black tupelo, and more. Our goal was to build a diverse urban canopy that stands out from Beaverton’s mostly monoculture urban forest. A variety of trees means a stronger, more resilient urban forest that’s better prepared for pests, disease, and climate change. Trending in the right direction! Big thanks to the City of Beaverton Urban Forestry for teaming up with us on this one. Together, we’re making Beaverton greener, healthier, and more connected. One tree at a time!

Friends of Trees reposted this
This weekend, I got to organize what’s probably my favorite tree planting in my three years with Friends of Trees! 🌳✨ With the help of over 30 amazing volunteers, we planted 20 large-stock, climate-forward trees at the Tigard Public Library. Working with several local nurseries, we sourced species native to Southern Oregon and California—planning for a future climate that will look a lot different than it does today. As temperatures rise, experts predict Portland’s climate may resemble Santa Rosa, CA (or even Bakersfield in worst-case scenarios) in the next 20-40 years. That’s why it’s more important than ever to plant trees that can thrive in a hotter, drier future. We planted a mix of species, including Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana), Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii), Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa), Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides), and more! Our goal was to create a savanna-inspired landscape that blends the ecological history of Oregon with forward-thinking climate adaptability. Big thanks to the Tigard Public Library for embracing this vision. Now, library visitors can learn more about climate-resilient trees, and volunteers can take pride in shaping a landscape that connects people to place in a meaningful way. Feeling incredibly grateful for everyone who made this project happen. 🌱 Here's to a greener, climate-smart future!

Friends of Trees will plant its monumental millionth tree* in this planting season, in April 2025! Our entire planting season—which is just getting started—will be a celebration of the impact of one million trees and native shrubs in our communities and natural areas, all planted by community volunteers. Our 1 Millionth Tree celebration will propel us into our next chapter of trees + community and get us started on the next million. We want your business to be a part of it! 🌳 This is an unprecedented, non-repeatable opportunity for Friends of Trees and our community. As part of this high-visibility, multifaceted campaign, we’ll have special events, storytelling, and additional promotional opportunities, above and beyond our already substantial suite of volunteer events, newsletters, social media content, and audience engagement. 🌳 Without the support of our business community, we wouldn't be able to bring people together to grow trees + community. To get involved in our Millionth Tree campaign, contact our Corporate & Business Relations Manager Sam Erman at SamE@FriendsofTrees.org.
