It has been 1 year since the rescue of Lenda and Lombo, a mission that would not have been possible without our incredible supporters. Thanks to the astounding care of the surrogate and veterinary teams at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary, Lenda and Lombo are en route to a happy and healthy life. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great Dikembe Mutombo, a humanitarian who gave selflessly to the Democratic of Congo, his native country. In 2014, Mutombo visited the Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary and was deeply moved by the gentle, intelligent beings he encountered. “What I see here is bigger than what I heard!” he said. He left us a beautiful letter, expressing his heartfelt thoughts: “This is the first time in my life that I come close to bonobos. I wish to do my best to spread the word in the USA about this nice place. God Bless You, D. Mutombo." Mutombo was well known for his contributions to healthcare in the Congo. He founded the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in 2007, named in honor of his mother, to provide medical care to underserved populations in the DRC. He also was a passionate advocate for forest protection, co-founding a company focused on renewable energy and carbon credits projects in Central African forests. Rest in peace, Dikembe Mutombo. Your spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those you inspired and supported, and in the forests you helped protect. 💔🌍 #InMemory #DikembeMutombo #RIP #RestInPeace #NBA Dikembe Mutombo Foundation dikembe mutombo officiel National Basketball Association (NBA)

Bonobos love to hold hands, cuddle, and groom each other as a way to stay connected. Bonding through physical affection helps keep their troops strong and is essential to the relationship between a bonobo mother and their baby, who stays by their side for up to 5 years!
