During Welcome Day for this year’s SPARK interns, local students met withdepartment leaders, spoke with previous program members and toured our command center and indoor substation. As SPARK participants, students receive advanced STEM education through hands-on learning and mentorship from our employees. They also get the chance to explore their interest in STEM fields and develop professional skills, opening pathways into the energy field at a young age and helping shape the next generation of leaders.

One of the outreach events I look forward to most this time of year is the Huston-Tillotson University Coding Camp hosting by Dr. Jennifer P. Miles, Ed.D. for middle and high school students. This one week program is not only learning about coding but hands-on designing and implementing solutions using robotics, app development, web storytelling and more. The Austin Energy #EV team gets to bring a real-world use case of how these technologies can function. We brought a show and tell for the campers through our EVs for Schools program with an interactive EV talk to connect the dots to #decarbonization and #climate protection, a City of Austin Ford Lightning, Virtual Reality EV racecar driving experience, the EV Spin Wheel of Fun & Facts, plus some cool swag! The students light up on these topics and are ready to bring their entrepreneurial spirits to help solve some of the greatest challenges of our time. K–12 classroom teachers joined Austin Energy and program partner EcoRise last month for a training session to launch the “EVs for Schools 2.0 Sustainable Transportation” curriculum. This unique workshop provided teachers with a range of opportunities and experiences to explore environmental justice topics through the lens of access to sustainable transportation. The training focused on supporting teachers in delivering the latest eco-literacy updates to “EVs for Schools” lessons, which originally launched in Austin Independent School District Title I schools in 2018. The program now includes more than 150 schools across central Texas and beyond! This engaging and interactive workshop included: ⚡ Exploration of the ecosystem of electric mobility and clean transportation. 🌎 Activities to build students' understanding of these topics to help them build context and knowledge to create sustainable, just solutions in their community. 💡 A mini-field experience at Austin Energy that includes a VR experience and an EV Demo/Show and Tell.
