"Affordable homes are built with ballots every bit as much as they are built with bricks and drywall." 💯 Created through the Our Homes, Our Votes campaign, the report "Voters Choose Housing" looks at nearly 100 state and local ballot measures from the 2022 elections. The study finds that, overall, housing and homelessness ballot measures were overwhelmingly successful, with voters approving substantial new resources for affordable homes, establishing and strengthening tenant protections, and reforming zoning laws to facilitate housing development. Conversations around homelessness can be filled with confusing jargon 🤔. When we talk about #LowBarrierShelter, we mean: 1️⃣ Shelter is lifesaving. 2️⃣ It should be easy to access for those that need it. 3️⃣ It should be easiest for the most vulnerable individuals. Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego recently visited the Amikas low-barrier shelter for women and families at Meridian Baptist Church. Oliver Benn (Jewish Community Foundation San Diego), Philip Kuey (Ascension Church), Lucky Michael (The Arlene & Michael Rosen Foundation), and other FTEHSD members toured the El Cajon facility last week, getting a firsthand look at the benefits of low-barrier shelters. This emergency shelter model embraces the idea that when basic needs for shelter are met, residents can focus on other needs, including permanent housing, health care, employment, and substance use treatment. When Airforce veteran Jexhi Grey secured housing after years of homelessness in San Diego, Humble Design San Diego stepped in with quality furnishings and personalized design services -- and transformed his space into a true home where he could reconnect with his son and rebuild his life. “This was the first time in my adult life I had a space that was clean enough and safe enough that he could come visit,” he said. “Our relationship has never been better, and it's because I've got that confidence. I've got that self-actualization.” Funders Together is proud to support new research from Humble Design and UCSD showing that Humble's home design services led to an exceptional 98 percent housing retention rate -- far above the system average. More than a roof over your head... design as a tool to stably rehouse people exiting homelessness💡 This morning our team joined a press conference highlighting new research from Humble Design San Diego and UC San Diego Homelessness Hub. Supported in part by Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego, the study found that Humble's services of custom design and furnishing their clients' homes led to 98 percent housing retention -- significantly higher than the system average. Jexsi Grey, a former client and now advisory board member/advocate with Humble, shared his personal experience during the press conference, describing the profound impact having a true home has made on his life and the lives of others: "When I think about Humble Design, I think about Hope presented in a way that’s often overlooked because it’s so hard to quantify. How do you put a dollar sign to self-actualization and dignity? Or what are the key performance indicators of someone who has finally achieved housing stability?" Complete study findings will be shared at the 2024 World Design Capital, held this year in the San Diego-Tijuana region. The practical benefits of turning housing into a home 💛 This week Humble Design San Diego and UCSD's Homelessness Hub presented the results of research funded by Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego and FTEHSD member, Cuore e Mani Foundation. The study found that when formerly homeless clients received Humble Design services, there was a significant increase in retention of their permanent housing. (TRANSLATION: Turning housing into a personalized home fosters a sense of belonging, improves mental health/social well-being, and significantly increases the likelihood that a person or family will remain stable and successful in their housing. MORE THAN FURNITURE & DECOR ⬇⬇⬇ While securing housing is the primary goal and a great challenge in and of itself, once secured, “just” having a place to dwell ignores the physical, psychological, and social aspects of housing. Once housed, many San Diegans who have recently experienced homelessness must use up all their time, energy, and money to achieve their basic needs. Here's where Humble Design steps in -- the nonprofit provides free interior design services to persons exiting homelessness, transforming housing into a true home. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/dMGXxUKe Check back with UCSD's Homelessness Hub for the full results of the research, which be released shortly. https://lnkd.in/dkzik427 #housingendshomelessness #sandiego #sandiegononprofit

"The new, unlikely face of homelessness: Working Americans with decent-paying jobs who simply can’t afford a place to live." #MythBustingMonday 👉 Many people experiencing homelessness are working one or multiple jobs. They may sleep in a car, shower at the gym, get a hotel room for the night when possible. But they are not as visible as individuals living on the street, who have substance use or mental health problems. The key driving factor for homelessness in San Diego and across the country is a lack of affordable housing, not unemployment. 💡 #HousingSolvesHomelessness https://lnkd.in/dpEDnCDS
