We had a terrific conversation yesterday at our Big Table. As you may know, Lora Fish SHRM-SCP. 🐟 and I do a lot of talking about workforce and talent. This time, we decided to use the Big Table to turn the tables (pun intended) to listen to others talk about their experiences and challenges with workforce and talent. We were selective in our invitations. We identified seven or eight people from various industries who we suspected had lots to say about hiring and retaining workers. Our provocative question: "What's up with workers today?" With that, they were off! A lively and thoughtful exchange of ideas ensued between Amy Wald, Dave Cherry, JD Null, Jacqueline Neal, CPA, CIA, and MBA, Chris McGovern, and Jill Calendine. I learned a lot and gained new insight on things I thought I already thoroughly knew. Sheesh! What a day!! Thank you to The Columbus Foundation for giving us the opportunity and the resources to host a Big Table. And a big thanks goes to Jill Calendine for being a gracious host and all our friends at Futurety for allowing us to use your space! A gardening analogy for your Monday. Last summer, I made some raised beds in my backyard. I threw some seeds in the ground, and watered it when I remembered to. Predictably, by July, it was all weeds, and the beds got leveled and turned back to grass. Thus ended my raised beds experiment. This spring, our Futurety group led by Louis John Murray created some raised beds at our office. As you can see, they've gone crazy! I just pulled at least 40 cherry tomatoes with twice that many still green on the vine. 2 lessons for gardens and business: 1. Make a plan: My beds had a haphazard plan, at best. The extra 30 minutes to buy the right frames, space the seeds, and weed the area first, really paid off. 2. Execute with consistency: I watered mine at best once a week. These beds get watered every morning at 6am with a timer (bonus for automating consistency!).
