Within less than ten years, the US is expected to have a shortage of 6 million workers, according to Lightcast (a provider of labor market data). This is partly because the domestic labor pool is getting smaller as the Baby Boomers exit. Bloomberg says, “In 2027, the number of Americans who turn 65—historically a typical retirement age—will exceed the number that turn 16 for the first time.” But that’s not the only factor causing the ultimate shortage. Another issue is that jobs are changing rapidly. The labor force is getting younger, more educated, and more female. However, the industries that will need more labor don’t necessarily require college degrees: construction, plumbing, and car maintenance among them. (I read most of this data on Bloomberg, and one of the things that struck me? There’s actually a pretty good solution to part of this problem: more women in the trades.) As a recruiter at Gables Search Group, I handle a different kind of hire: information workers. For this talent pool, work is changing for yet another reason—because of Gen AI. This suddenly ubiquitous technology is changing the way we work, and as a result, it’s changing the very nature of jobs. For those coming up in the professional world, looking ahead to the skills the work world will soon demand is one way to gain an advantage in your future career. #HRnews #workershortage #thefutureofwork

Rain in October brings wind in December. A warm October brings a cold February. When deer are in gray coat in October, expect a hard winter. A blood moon (which we’ll see on October 28th) means a jaguar is attacking the moon goddess! How is October going where you live? I love this kind of Farmer’s Almanac lore, although if you live in a place where deer aren’t showcasing their seasonal coats on a daily basis, you may have to rely on the high-tech weather report to find out what kind of winter we’re actually going to have. The climate of work is equally up for discussion. As a recruiter for 28+ years, I notice climate shifts happening in the workforce over time. More people are looking to change jobs and perhaps even careers, for instance. If you are one of them, October may be an auspicious time for you to make a change. Rather than consulting the Farmer’s Almanac, reach out today to get started on your job search. #howtogethired #octoberfolklore

Let’s talk AI prompts. That’s the phrase you feed an AI engine to get results. Here are a few examples I found of how HR folks might use AI prompts: - “Write a job description for [a specific role].” - “Generate a set of interview questions for [a specific role].” - “Outline the skills requirements for [a specific role].” But one thing to remember is that for AI to be truly useful, you often have to refine your prompts and ask the AI engine to try again. The more you experiment with AI, the better you’ll get at prompting it, and the better it will get at helping you with your job. As a recruiter at Gables Search Group, and in my conversations with all kinds of leaders and professionals, I don’t see AI taking over any HR jobs in the near term. But it can be a really useful tool if you take the time to get to know how to use it. On that note, how are you using AI prompts in your job, particularly for hiring?

When CrowdStrike CEO Michael Sentonas showed up to accept the Pwnie Award at hacker conference Def Con, people gasped. The award, doled out annually, pokes fun at companies with the biggest security failures of the year. CrowdStrike certainly deserved this one. The company’s July IT outage affected 8.5 million enterprise systems running Microsoft Windows around the world, causing them to crash—and messing up air travel, broadcasting, and many more industries. But accepting the Pwnie was a lesson in leadership. Sentonas demonstrated that good leadership sometimes means owning your mistakes. He said, “We got this horribly wrong… and it’s super important to own when you do things well, but it’s super important to own when you do things horribly.” He then went on to explain that he planned to display the trophy at CrowdStrike HQ as a reminder to his teams to always strive to do their best. Leadership is certainly not easy. Often, it means taking responsibility when someone on your team makes a mistake. The right candidate for a leadership role is one who knows how to stay humble and curious. In my role as a recruiter at Gables Search Group, I strive to find those people for my clients. #failup
