About us
In 1998, a group of San Francisco parents had the dream of creating a school that would be a gateway to college for all students regardless of race, income, or learning style. They founded Gateway High School, a college preparatory, public charter school in San Francisco focused on serving an academically disadvantaged student population. Since then, more than 96% of Gateway graduates have gone on to college – more than double the statewide average. Gateway students reflect the diversity of San Francisco: • 75% are students of color • 25% of our students have a diagnosed learning disability • 50% fall below the poverty line and qualify for free lunch • 40% are first-generation college bound In 2011, we expanded our model with the addition of Gateway Middle School to leverage our impact and reach students in the formative middle grades. Today, close to 800 students attend Gateway Public Schools, and more than 1,200 of our students have matriculated to college. By serving as a model school organization, we hope to demonstrate that public education can and does work for diverse learners, share best practices, and serve as a catalyst for change within the public sphere.

5/30 UPDATE: We're already at $3,500 raised! Let's gooooo!!! I chaperoned prom this year - these seniors were just 6th graders when I started at Gateway Public Schools in 2017. Now they're The Posse Foundation Scholars (red dress), Los Angeles-bound (tie), and University of San Francisco 4+1 scholarship recipients (blue dress). I'm so proud of our students and this time of year shows off the tangible outcomes of a Gateway education: college acceptances, AP testing, scholarships, community awards, and more. Yesterday, the Burl Toler Scholars hosted a group of 8th graders who will attend GHS next year for a day previewing what high school life is all about. Through a campus tour, scavenger hunt activity, lunch and student panel, the scholars of today welcomed the bright young minds of tomorrow and showcased all the fantastic opportunities that await them next year. Big thanks to all the staff and students who volunteered their time to make the day a success! 👏

Our recent GMS Career Day was a huge success! Students had an incredible time exploring various career paths and interacting with professionals from diverse fields. A huge thank you to all the amazing speakers and volunteers who made this day possible. Your insights and enthusiasm truly made a lasting impact on our students. We are so proud of our middle schoolers for their curiosity and eagerness to learn. Here's to SF's future leaders and innovators!
