    🚨 PSA 🚨 If you have children under 12, block out Thursday, October 31st, so you don't miss the school Halloween parade. 🎃 👻 That’s in less than eight weeks, and calendars are filling up. And that morning don't think you can get them dressed and do their makeup while taking a conference call. And they'll be trash Friday morning, so we might as well plan for a slow morning on November 1st. IYKYK Don't miss this ridiculous fun...even during the “busy” employee benefits season. It's not worth it. If your boss, client, or prospect doesn’t understand, then you’re working with the wrong people. 👻 Managers - Don't make your team guess + stress. Block YOUR calendar so you don't book a meeting someone feels guilty about declining. This is my daughter and her best friends 16 years ago as mad scientists. They studied neuroscience, economics, and archeology at Columbia, UC Berkeley, and Notre Dame.     Earlier today we held a power 🧠 storm with GenuineShift ideating how LEGO Serious Play could supercharge collaboration within employee benefit brokerage firms and the extended ecosystem of carriers and partners. Stay tuned... To get primed we picked up bricks and built models to share a little story of something that made us happy last week.     “I want to be available and help my team, but I spend all day getting interrupted to solve their problems!” 😮💨 The tension between coaching and enabling is real. When people are stressed and pinched for time, it’s not uncommon to see high-performers take back (or take over) work instead of guiding a colleague toward a solution. They care deeply about speed and quality and can get caught in a trap where they feel like they have to do it because nobody else can… Yet nobody else can because we haven’t shown them how or allowed space (and grace) to practice. Alaska Airlines gave me a courtesy notice last night about my flight today to WBN - Worldwide Broker Network’s 70th global conference. “No WIFI for you tomorrow” I appreciated their honesty and grabbed a book off the shelf that I hadn’t looked at for a few months - Traction. As you reflect upon your day, pause if you notice any frustration about other people’s problems that you have to solve. Did you let them drop their monkey off with you? 🙈🙉🙊 Did you insist they leave it and now you’re crabby about it? 😂 While this excerpt is about direct reports, employee benefits is a team sport. I’ve seen Producers, Account Executives and Account Managers all drop off monkeys and never look back. 👀 I know there were times in my career when I was moving so fast that I automatically went into fix-it mode instead of pausing to encourage someone to talk through their options. Are you doing the same? Maybe your team can incorporate this into your shared language… “I’m not dropping off this monkey with you, but I need advice on where to put him.” Or “Are you asking me to take care of the monkey or you need advice?” As for the last highlighted line, get curious about why someone can’t walk out with the monkey. It usually has more to do with training and preparedness than dedication or smarts.     I’ve never seen an individual, team, office or national employee benefits practice grow without a team to do the work. Have you? They might push the limits for a short time. But it’s not a sustainable model and certainly isn’t profitable. It gets expensive as they lose clients, talent or both. So if we can’t win, implement, and retain ideal clients without a reliable, dedicated team to do the work promised in the sales process… Why do we keep saying “just your day-to-day” contact? As I work with Sales and Client Service teams on their business introductions, I’ve noticed a few habits we need to retire. “I’m Tracy. I’m just your day-to-day contact.” Or from a Producer. “This is Sue. She’s your day-to-day contact. Contact me for anything strategic.” 🚫 Just 🚫 Day-to-day These words no longer line up with the complexity of our business. Nor do they inspire confidence. Don’t waste the opportunity to clarify how the client service colleague is instrumental in helping the client accomplish their goals. 🎯 The introduction is the foundation of your business relationship, and you don’t want to kick things off with a self-inflicted wound. I’ll share this and other best practices with a group of Producers tomorrow. Will you take the pledge to eliminate the "just” and “day-to-day" habit today?
