At the core of CSS is the Security Studies Program (SSP), a multidisciplinary course of study and one of eight master’s degree programs offered in the Walsh School of Foreign Service. The program’s overarching mission is to teach a new generation of analysts, policymakers, and scholars to think critically and act responsibly in the face of the 21st century’s most pressing national and international security problems. The SSP curriculum is designed to give students a broad array of course options which provide a solid foundation in core security issues. The program’s graduates have filled key positions in the U.S. and foreign governments, the defense industry and the private sector, research institutions, and non-governmental and international organizations. Yesterday was one of those days that I’ll remember for a long time. I got the incredible opportunity to visit the Pentagon for my Hacking for Defense® (H4D) class - a course sponsored by the Department of Defense that challenges us to work alongside the Defense and Intelligence Communities in addressing the nation’s emerging threats and security challenges. As an international student, I never imagined I’d be able to go beyond the visitor’s center and experience the inner workings of such an important institution. Our team’s project, sponsored by the US Army, focuses on synchronization problem in the INDO-PACOM area of responsibility. While the project itself is a challenging puzzle, the day took on a whole new meaning when Elizabeth Lapporte and I had the chance to interview Mr. Brynt Parmeter, the inaugural Chief Talent Management Officer at the Department of Defense. We got valuable perspective on our problem and potential solution pathway by listening to his anecdotes and insights from his Army experience. This experience has reinforced for me how unique and supportive the environment has been at Georgetown Center for Security Studies. This can only happen at SSP, where you get these amazing opportunities and everyone in the program tries to make sure that I am not at any disadvantage for being an international student in the National Security space. The mentorship I’ve received from Prof. Alex Gallo, Ph.D. and Jessica Knocklein has been invaluable. The guidance at SSP has not only enriched my learning experience but has also made me feel included in a field that can sometimes seem overwhelming. As I approach my graduation in May, I’m filled with both gratitude for the journey so far and excitement for what lies ahead. I’m looking forward to exploring opportunities in geopolitical risk analysis, South Asia, and product/project management. Each experience, from visiting the Pentagon to engaging in real-world projects that has real-time implications, is a steppingstone towards a future where I can make a meaningful contribution.

Last week, Security Studies students along with students in the Conflict Resolution program had the opportunity to attend "Making Conflict Mediation Work in a Time of Geopolitical Crisis" facilitated by Paul Dziatkowiec, Director of Mediation and Peace Support at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. We discussed the practice of unofficial mediation, its strengths and limitations, and how its methods can work hand-in-hand with traditional diplomacy to advance the pursuit of peace. Thank you, Mr. Dziatkowiec for this timely talk.
