Earlier this week, the Atlantic Council’s Economic Statecraft Initiative hosted Eddie Fishman, Daniel Fried, Stuart Levey, Nazak Nikakhtar, and Adam Szubin to highlight the launch of Fishman’s New York Times bestselling book, “Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare,” and discuss how economic warfare has shaped global power dynamics. The conversation with moderated by Kimberly Donovan, director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative. Key takeaways from the event: ➡️ A chokepoint is an area of the global economy in which one state has a dominant position, and there are very few, if any, alternatives. ➡️ The US dollar and financial system are key chokepoints that the US can leverage in an economic war. ➡️ The world is increasingly turning to the use of sanctions and export controls over military intervention, but we need to make sure we use these economic statecraft tools wisely. ➡️ Sanctions and pressure don’t work until they do. The impact may not be as immediate as we would like, but it remains profound. Watch the full discussion: ➡️ https://bit.ly/4iPwHfv

#UkraineAlert – “Any progress toward peace is certainly welcome, but Putin’s support for Trump’s partial ceasefire should be seen as a pragmatic move rather than an indication of his readiness to end the invasion of Ukraine,” writes David Kirichenko.

Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned Ronen Bar, the director of Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency, to inform him of his impending dismissal. “Bar’s removal after a showdown with Netanyahu risks destabilizing the Shin Bet,” writes Shalom Lipner.
