Last Thursday, the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center and Atlantik-Brücke e.V. concluded the third annual flagship Transatlantic Forum on GeoEconomics, hosted in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Four keynote speakers and seven high-level panels covered the most pressing economic and national security priorities for the next administration: 1) Securing the #financial system, 2) Protecting sensitive #technology, and 3) Driving #energy transition. ❗Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman stated that the US GDP could be boosted by 50 basis points if we could root out all fraud across the US banking system. ❗Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, US Treasury Director Andrea Gacki, and U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary Matt Axelrod discussed the role of financial intelligence in keeping sensitive technology out of the hands of the most dangerous actors. ❗U.S. Department of Justice Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco dove into the work of the Disruptive Technology Strike Force, which is going after actors violating export controls and siphoning critical technology to adversarial states. ❗US Ambassador to China R. Nicholas Burns encouraged us to watch the risks associated with AI, quantum technology, and biotechnology in the military sphere and expressed hope for dialogue with China on this issue. ❗The White House Deputy National Security Advisor Daleep Singh emphasized the need for positive tools of economic statecraft to promote supply chain resilience, technological preeminence, and energy security. 📖 As part of this conference, Indiana University Bloomington Professor and Atlantic Council Senior Fellow Sarah Bauerle Danzman wrote a report on electric vehicles, the issue at the forefront of technological and economic competition right now. Three years ago, a group from the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center including Ole Moehr, Julia Friedlander, & Maia Nikoladze developed an idea to create a new annual event focused on the geoeconomic challenges facing both the US and Europe. From supply chains to digital assets to sanctions and beyond we felt there was a need to build a community of practitioners to create a better set of transatlantic solutions for the current moment. That's how the Transatlantic Forum hosted by Atlantic Council & Atlantik-Brücke e.V. was created. In 2022 we launched the concept in Frankfurt, in 2023 we brought the conference to Berlin, and now in 2024, we hosted the event in New York during UNGA week. Thanks to the brilliant leadership of Kimberly Donovan we were able to bring together public and private sector leaders from Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, and beyond to outline the way forward. A key example - brand new research from Senior Fellow Sarah Bauerle Danzman on EVs and supply chains. Her work is groundbreaking - take the time to see what she has mapped out. This concept only works because an amazing community has traveled with us for these events and give their time and wisdom to the effort. My thanks to Daleep Singh, Elizabeth Kelly, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Ambassador Jon Huntsman, Carole House, Adena Friedman, Andrea Gacki, Under Secretary Jay Shambaugh, Acting Under Secretary Brad Smith, Assistant Secretary Matt Axelrod, UK Sanctions Director David Reed, Candace Kelly, David Levy, Eva Maydell (Paunova), Christopher Smith, Anahita Thoms, Karan Bhatia, Ambroise Fayolle, Jennifer Fowler, Chandana R., Daniel Tannebaum, Stefan Simon and many, many more. It was a special honor for me to open the conference moderating a conversation with US Ambassador to China R. Nicholas Burns, who is, as he reminded our audience, my former professor. We were excited to partner with Bloomberg this year and feature insights from Saleha Mohsin, Daniel Flatley, Steph Flanders, & David Westin. We have an amazing team that worked day and night to pull this together including Maia Nikoladze who helped lead on this event alongside Atlantik Brucke colleagues in Berlin Jakob Flemming Robin Ferhrenbach Beate Wilde Laura Korndoerfer and our entire GeoEconomics Center team with support from Alessandra Magazzino and Mikael Pir-Budagyan. Iveta Kruma deserves special thanks to being a driving force behind creating the entire way this conference works going back to 2022. There's an entire team working with her including Jesús Alejandre Fernández, Zachary Thomas Tarrant, Emily Hopkins and many more. This conference represents the thesis of the GeoEconomics Center - that national security, finance, and economics are deeply interconnected. The events of the last few years have proven the point. So get ready for Transatlantic Forum 2025... this time coming to Brussels. You can catch-up on everything you might have missed here: https://lnkd.in/gevSt5My
