We’re grateful for our partners at Georgia EMC for sharing how #HurricaneHelene caused serious damage to our high-voltage transmission lines and substations. The damage to the transmission side of the electrical grid is extensive, surpassing the damage we saw to our system as the result of Hurricane Michael in 2018. It takes both the transmission system and distribution system to deliver electricity to homes and businesses. As our member EMCs continue to make repairs to their distribution systems, Georgia Transmission also continues our work to restore the transmission system. We’ll keep working together to ensure power is safely restored to our fellow Georgians.

As helicopters and fixed-wing planes fly Georgia Transmission’s high-voltage transmission lines to assess damage, they’ve encountered hundreds of trees on lines, toppled transmission towers, flooding and impassable roadways. The damage is unprecedented, but Georgia Transmission continues to make progress with 80 of more than 100 electrical substations knocked out by Helene now at full operation. Repairs to high-voltage transmission lines prove to be more challenging, but progress is still being made. Please treat all lines as energized and dangerous and keep a safe distance from crews working.

A big shout-out to Forsyth County for their outstanding communication on our recent high-voltage transmission line project at Hammonds Crossing. Thanks to collaboration with John Jefferson, Director of Capital Projects, and Russell Brown, Director of Communications, along with the rest of their staff, this complex project ran smoothly and finished three weeks early! Their assistance in pre-planning and communication allowed us to substitute bucket trucks for helicopters, thus speeding up the project and minimizing traffic disruption. With their team's help, we provided timely updates via social media and radio announcements. In appreciation of these efforts, we continue to help Sawnee EMC deliver reliable and cost-effective power to the community.

Georgia Transmission colleagues Katheryn Graff and William Gee recently joined fellow classmates of the Georgia EMC - The University of Georgia J.W. Fanning Institute Electric Cooperative Management and Leadership Development Program to volunteer at The Cottage in Athens. The group completed a beautification project that included plantings and mulch, along with a new fence, signs and outdoor seating. The Cottage is a crisis center that supports individuals, families and communities affected by child abuse and sexual violence. The beautification project aimed to support The Cottage’s desire to always create a safe place that feels like home. Other participants in the management and leadership development program represent GreyStone Power Corporation, Jackson EMC, Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation, Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corporation and Walton EMC.
