🚨 Tropical Storm Debby Update: August 6, 2024 🚨 Debby's center is near the Georgia coast, with strong winds and rain bands stretching into South Carolina. The storm's wind field has expanded, with sustained winds of 35-40 kt observed along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. Forecast: Debby will move offshore of Georgia today, then meander off the South Carolina coast through early Thursday. By late this week, Debby will move north across the Carolinas and into the Mid-Atlantic. Little change in intensity is expected today, but strengthening is forecast for Wednesday due to warm waters and low wind shear. Peak intensity is expected to reach 50 kt (58 mph) before moving inland again, then weakening as it merges with a front over the eastern U.S. in 4-5 days. 🚨 Debby Strengthens: Historic Rainfall and Dangerous Winds to Impact Multiple States 🚨 The eyewall of Hurricane Debby is moving onshore, with landfall in Florida’s Big Bend expected in the next few hours. Doppler radar images from Tallahassee show the hurricane's eye becoming more circular and deep convection remaining organized over the eastern eyewall. Reports indicate sustained winds of 57 kt and gusts to 83 kt at Horseshoe Beach. Air Force Hurricane Hunters suggest maximum winds near 70 kt, with potential strengthening before reaching the coast. Key Messages: 1. Historic Rainfall and Flooding: Potentially historic heavy rainfall across southeast Georgia and the coastal plain of South Carolina through Saturday morning, leading to catastrophic flooding. Considerable flooding impacts expected from portions of central and northern Florida to central and northeast North Carolina through Saturday morning. 2. Storm Surge Danger: Life-threatening storm surge expected along portions of the Florida Gulf Coast, with 6 to 10 feet of inundation above ground level predicted between Ochlockonee River and Yankeetown. Residents in the Storm Surge Warning area should follow any advice given by local officials. 3. Hurricane Conditions: Hurricane conditions anticipated this morning along portions of the Florida Big Bend region under a Hurricane Warning. Tropical storm conditions expected to continue for several more hours farther south within the Tropical Storm Warning area, including Tampa Bay. 4. Coastal Impacts: Dangerous storm surge and wind impacts expected along the southeast U.S. coast from northeastern Florida to North Carolina through mid-week. Storm surge warnings and tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect for these areas. Additional Information: After landfall, Debby is expected to slow down and turn northeastward, moving across northern Florida and southeastern Georgia later today through Tuesday. Most models show Debby moving off the Southeast U.S. coast late Tuesday and Wednesday before potentially returning inland over South Carolina on Thursday. Rapid weakening is forecast after the center moves inland, likely becoming a tropical storm over northern Florida this afternoon. If Debby moves back offshore, there could be slight strengthening before it moves inland again. Regardless of the system's strength, the main impact is expected to be heavy rainfall, resulting in severe flooding.
