In this episode of Glean Education's "Research to Practice" podcast, Jan Hasbrouck, Ph.D. sits down with Jessica Hamman to talk reading fluency and debunk myths related to this important skill. Some takeaways for teachers can be seen below... 📚 Speed Isn't Everything: Reading faster doesn't necessarily mean better comprehension. 📚 Work Toward the Sweet Spot: The optimal reading rate for comprehension lies between the 50th and 75th percentile on Hasbrouck-Tindal ORF norms 📚Notice Red flags: Students reading more than 10 words below the 50th percentile may be struggling. 📚Diagnostic Approach: When fluency issues are identified, investigate underlying factors that might be inhibiting progress like lack of phonics skill mastery. Imagine a teacher on your staff comes to you with concerns about a student in their class. They explain the student's letters are not uniform, their spelling is inaccurate, and written tasks are laborious for them. Would you recognize these as signs of dysgraphia? If you feel uncertain about what dysgraphia is, you’re not alone. Michael McCloskey and Brenda Rapp, researchers at Johns Hopkins University, explain that dysgraphia is “common and [has] significant consequences for those who suffer from them, yet these deficits have received relatively little attention from researchers.” Our blog outlines what dysgraphia is, seven (7) red flags to look for, and appropriate accommodations to support students. If teachers suspect a student is struggling with dysgraphia, encourage them to refer to your school’s child study team for evaluation. #edleaders #superintendents #principals #structuredliteracy #teachertraining #literacy #dysgraphia #leadership

When we partner with districts, we're able to move the needle on literacy progress across multiple schools. In our work with Calcasieu Parish, we provide training and coaching support for their robust literacy coaching staff who support elementary through high school teachers. Having district-level support as part of this initiative continues to have positive impacts on coaching practices and student literacy outcomes.
