Congratulations to members of our Collections team for a successful (and busy!) visit to the recent American Institute for Conservation & Foundation for Advancement in Conservation conference in Salt Lake City.  Glenstone’s Associate Conservator  Sam Owens and Assistant Curator Daniel Mauro discussed their work on artist Gary Hill’s interactive 1992 video installation, “Tall Ships”. They were joined by Cass Fino-Radin, founder of Small Data Industries, who was an instrumental collaborator and leader in the project. Together, the group presented on the conservation process for “Tall Ships”, which included maintaining the custom projectors used in the work while migrating the original LaserDiscs to a Raspberry Pi-based backend solution. Our Conservation Fellow, Kaela Nurmi, also participated in two presentations and gave a presentation and poster (co-authored with our Electrician and Trades Supervisor, Nick Ecker and 2022 Graduate Conservation Intern Elisse Brautigam) on the conservation of Sol Lewitt’s “Wall Structure in Nine Parts, Each Containing a Work of Art by Other Artists”, 1963, as well as a presentation on the conservation of works by artist Thornton Dial.

Our associates had a blast (and learned a lot!) while visiting the annual American Alliance of Museums conference this weekend in Baltimore. ⁣ ⁣ Glenstone associates Tan Tran and Andrea Desjardins presented a poster on Glenstone’s school visit programs, and Ariana Kaye and Chris Ryan presented on what it takes to care for Jeff Koons’ “Split-Rocker”, 2000. Other associates attended talks, panels, workshops, and spent some time exploring Baltimore. Our Learning and Development Specialist, Emily, reflected "AAM 2024 was an expansive weekend filled to the brim with opportunity to consider aspects of museums and cultural institutions that may not be part of my everyday workflow. Connecting with current Glenstonians, former Glenstonians, and colleagues from other institutions was the most meaningful aspect of the weekend for me - it felt like a mini reunion."
