I have probably done 100+ interviews myself for KaiPod Learning's Catalyst program where we meet educators (teachers, special education leaders, school principals) who have the dream of starting their own school. The first thing that usually hits me in these interviews is how tired, upset, and constrained some of these folks are. They are going in day after day, trying to do the best job possible, but the system holds them back! The second thing that hits me is that despite all of these challenges, they still have the heart for kids, a passion for learning, and a desire to do more. Starting their own school would be the vehicle for them to be the change they wish to see in the world. And by the end of these interviews, I'm often left with an incredible sense of optimism that the right people to change the conditions on the ground are the people who know it best. There's no better work than this. 🚀 One day, every child will love the school they're in. 🚀

Unlearning Leadership and Embracing Guidance: A Six-Week Journey This year, I came to a powerful realization—I don’t need to lead my students; I need to guide them. This shift in thinking came after a six-week journey of helping scholars set the stage for a successful year. We started by diving deep into who they are as learners. We explored their love languages, discovered how they best process information through Gardner’s multiple intelligences, and took personality tests to better understand how they interact with the world around them. Throughout this process, we didn’t just complete activities—we had meaningful discussions, watched thought-provoking videos, and created space for reflection. The goal was to help them gain self-awareness while building a strong classroom community. Our final project was something practical, yet unexpectedly profound: creating personal planners. I had no idea how much this would reveal about each student. Every planner was a unique reflection of what that individual scholar needed. Some were filled with pages for art, others with detailed task lists or goal-setting pages. It was in this moment that I truly saw the power of stepping back and letting students design their own learning tools. I didn’t need to dictate their steps—they already knew where they needed to go. I’m beyond grateful for the technology that made this level of personalization possible, but more so for the clarity that came with learning to guide rather than lead. My role became about asking questions, listening, and creating an environment where students could confidently ask their own. The students took the lead during a panel presentation, and watching them confidently share their work and insights confirmed that this approach was right. Allowing them to lead their project-based learning while I stood beside them—not in front—was a game-changer. Having a curriculum that offers both structure and freedom, paired with a strong and supportive administrative team, has made this all possible. This journey has shown me that I am exactly where I need to be. By stepping back, I’ve helped my students step forward, and that has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. #unlearning #stepback #microschool #studentled #guidenotlead #projectbasedlearning #canva #quest #studentplanners

The American spirit of entrepreneurship has affected every segment of our economy — except education. That is changing. Yesterday, at the US Senate, I had the opportunity to give voice to the hard work of education entrepreneurs who are stepping up to build schools. And, something feels different about this moment -- this wasn't just lip service to school choice and teacher autonomy; in their questions, we could sense the deep-seated desire for change and the inevitable realization that teachers are the ones who are going to create the schools of the future! To represent KaiPod Learning and these dedicated educators in the halls of the American government was an honor beyond anything else I could describe in writing.

Why Flexibility Wins: Micro-Schools Mastering the Art of Adaptation In the world of micro-schools, flexibility isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a necessity. This week, I saw firsthand why this adaptability is so crucial. On Thursday morning, every single one of my students walked in exhausted. Whether it was because they told me themselves or I heard it from their parents, the message was clear: they were running on empty. Instead of pushing through our planned schedule, I hit pause. We had a quick conversation to understand the reasons behind their fatigue, and then I did something that might seem unconventional in a traditional school setting—I told them to find a quiet spot in our studio and take a nap. Yes, you heard that right. They rested while I restructured our rhythm for the day. This is where the power of micro-schools shines. We have the autonomy to adapt our day-to-day activities based on what our students need in real-time. We’re not bound by rigid schedules; we can adjust and respond to their well-being, ensuring they’re in the best frame of mind to learn. Later, when they were more refreshed, we turned this experience into a learning opportunity. We had an open discussion about the importance of sleep—what it means to truly rest, the impact of screens before bed, and how to create an environment conducive to better sleep. We talked about white noise, soothing sounds like rain or the sea, and how these small changes can make a big difference. This wasn’t just about addressing their tiredness; it was about equipping them with life skills. We discussed the broader implications—how fatigue affects work ethic, planning, and overall well-being. In a world where teenagers often feel like so much is out of their control, these conversations empower them to take charge of what they can. Flexibility is the key to making this possible. It’s about creating a learning environment where the schedule serves the students, not the other way around. That’s why micro-schools work—they allow us to meet students where they are, adapt to their needs, and ensure that their education is as holistic and personalized as possible. #Theeduconciergepodcast #microschools #innovativeedu #flexiblelearning #holisticedu #studentcentered #GlobalEducationConcierge #theeduconcierge

This one’s for all my teacher friends who are balancing the excitement of a new school year with the personal goals that might be pulling them in a new direction. As a former classroom teacher, here’s a reminder to embrace the lessons from where you are right now, as you prepare for where you’re headed. 5 Skills I Picked Up as a Middle School Math Teacher That Still Help Me Today ✅ Influence Middle school classrooms can be a bit wild, and I quickly learned that trying to control everything with authority didn’t work. Instead, teaching with influence—building trust and creating a positive vibe—made my classroom a place where everyone wanted to be. ✅ Command There’s something to be said about having a commanding presence that isn’t intimidating. My students showed me how to strike that balance—staying strong yet approachable—so we could keep the classroom in order while still having a supportive space. ✅ Empathy My students weren’t just there to learn math—they had their own complex lives going on. Recognizing them as whole people and understanding their challenges helped me support them better, both in and out of the classroom. ✅ Commitment There were days when I felt completely overwhelmed, but my commitment to my students and their success kept me going. Staying committed, even on the tough days, taught me the value of perseverance and dedication—lessons I carry with me in every role. ✅ Humility Teaching middle schoolers humbled me in the best way. They reminded me that no one has all the answers, and it’s okay to say, “I don’t know, but let’s figure it out together.” That humility has served me well in every role I’ve taken on since. #transitioningteachers
