Last Thursday evening my wife Erin and I had an incredible opportunity to attend a #Web3 focused panel discussion featuring Cathie Wood of ARK Investment Management LLC at The Dalí Museum 🤩 This was followed by a 3.5 hour private dinner with Cathie and several key members of the Ark Invest team. It had been a long time since we had a true “dinner conversation” where we sat at a table with unique people who have all lived interesting lives and shared their stories and perspectives on various topics ranging to the future of the “finternet” to how the advent of AI will radically transform many industries, especially medicine. One of my favorite moments was definitely geeking out about Cormac McCarthy and his novel Blood Meredian with David Puell. We had the entire table rapt with attention as we talked about “The Judge” being one of the most malevolent characters to ever grace the pages of literature. Okay, so technically it’s three weeks and two days until the Staking Summit, but I’m honestly just too excited to wait to make this post. This is the third time we’re organizing the Staking Summit—we’ve been in Lisbon (Europe), Istanbul (somewhat in the middle, partly in Asia and partly in Europe), and now Bangkok (Asia). Maybe next year we’ll do something in Latin America, and I’m still trying to convince my CEO to have a work retreat in Africa just once, haha. Anyways, in three weeks, it’s the Staking Summit, which has mostly been a year-long project in the making, with other events in between. I would love to meet many of you there—especially investors, validators, home stakers, and protocols building in the space. It’s really going to be kickass (am I allowed to use this word on LinkedIn?). After returning to NYC from Singapore at the beginning of October, still battling jetlag, I made my way to Salt Lake City for Permissionless III. Now, I've finally had the chance to reflect on my incredible experience at the event. I had the privilege of chatting with Harry Kalodner from Offchain Labs, who shared some game-changing insights about Arbitrum’s future. His thoughts on making validation truly permissionless through the BOLD protocol really got me thinking about scalability and what that means for the next generation of L2 solutions. Ben Jones from Optimism Foundation gave me some really thought-provoking ideas on their "Superchain" vision, where layer-2 networks can interact seamlessly like they’re one chain. His focus on eliminating liquidity fragmentation while staying true to decentralization really showed how Optimism is pushing the boundaries in creating interoperable blockchain environments. Nana Murugesan from Matter Labs also shared his thoughts on how zkSync is leveraging zero-knowledge rollups to scale Ethereum without compromising on decentralization. It was one of those “aha” moments that really clicked. Avichal Garg from Electric Capital brought up some fascinating points about how Web3 innovation intersects with national security. His take on how infrastructure investments will drive the next phase of blockchain development was both enlightening and motivating. Huge thanks to Keone Hon from Monad Labs for taking the time to elaborate on what consumer-grade application could look like in a decentralized future. Lastly, I had some unforgettable moments with the GlobalStake Gang, Richard Shorten, Ryan Haczynski, and Jordan Knecht, MBA. A big thank you to them for hosting such an amazing side event 🙏 ! Starting the week after a great visit to Salt Lake City last week for Permissionless. I had a lot of great discussions with current and future Marinade customers about our industry-leading Solana staking platform for institutions. Our focus on no smart-contract risk in our Marinade Native product continues to resonate. I also participated in a couple of events, the first an informal roundtable discussion with Ben Sparango Jr. from the Solana Foundation at the Solana Founders day about GTM targeting institutions for startups. Next up was a panel I had the honor of moderating on Institutional Defi with Christopher Perkins from CoinFund, David Schwartz from Ripple, and John Patrick Mullin from MANTRA. We started off trying to define CeFi and DeFi and then dived deep into where we are in terms of adoption of DeFi by CeFi and Tradfi. Perspectives were varied but we broadly agreed that, while we are early in this evolution, that the adoption of stablecoins is a strong signal that the adoption cycle has begun and will soon move up the stack of Tradfi products and services. The conference concluded with a great dinner with Dax Hansen at a Perkins Coie dinner with some other leaders from the our industry. Thanks to Jason Yanowitz and Blockworks for a great conference.
