Recently we had the opportunity to sponsor the Mariah's Miracle Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser and it was a blast! Such a fun, awesome event for a great cause! Mariah's Miracle was started in honor of Mariah DeVries who was a pediatric physical therapist at AZOPT and Kids Place, MM provides assistance to cover the cost of pediatric patients' needed therapy and equipment when insurance will not cover. The vision is that every Arizona child receives the services and resources critical to living a full life. Thank you to Chicken N Pickle for hosting the event! And a huge shoutout to Brad S. Teri Roberts, PT, DPT, PCS Ryann Roberts and their entire team for putting on such a wonderful event and allowing us to be a small part of it! "You good? Ya mahn!" Last week I had the unforgettable opportunity to join Dr. Mark Gormley and several others from Gillette Children's in providing spasticity management care for children in Jamaica! Dr. Gormley, Dr. Paula Dawson and their group of residents and fellows provided phenol and botox injections for patients while myself, Rebekah Kontz and others provided bracing and equipment to these kiddos. The first little boy we saw (in the pink wheelchair and hairnet) received a wheelchair and bracing for the first time. Previously mom just carried him or he crawled everywhere he went. So when we sat him in the chair he had the biggest smile. When we tried to move him out to make some adjustments he started to tear up and did not want to get out of his chair! Jamaican's are such a beautiful, confident, yet humble people that love to laugh and they are so witty and fun! I loved learning about their culture and hearing them interact and check in on each other with "Heyyy!! You good?" Followed by a "Ya mahn". It was an amazing experience and reminder of why we do what we do. To see these kids and families who many of them had traveled by bus for several hours to see us receive the help and care that is so routine for patients we treat in the states, it was eye opening to say the least. To top it all off we got to meet Jamaican track legend Yohan Blake! A huge thank you to Rebekah for inviting me to go on this trip and be a small part of this incredible outreach effort that they have been doing for nearly 15 years, making a difference in the lives of so many children and families! Until next time Jamaica! #onelove
