NYC's leading provider of training in college access for practitioners working with students on their postsecondary pathways

We continue to feature career search tools this week. The John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity – is a center at John Jay College/CUNY that offers educational programs in prisons and in the community for people with conviction records who are currently enrolled or thinking about enrolling in college. They offer academic counseling, career counseling, legal services, and much more! The John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity has released its online resource toolkit, Navigating Higher Education and Employment: Resource Toolkit for People Impacted by the Criminal Legal System. Going to college and finding a job that’s meaningful and pays well is challenging for most students, and the added background of a criminal record can make it seem particularly overwhelming. This kit is available to help make the process of realizing goals manageable. This resource is a user-friendly and accessible toolkit that walks users through several phases and processes that students with conviction records will likely confront in their journey of pursuing higher education and finding meaningful employment in New York State and New York City. It also includes a glossary of terms. The toolkit connects users to key information and tangible resources centered on four phases:  1) Before You Enroll in College 2) Enrolling in College 3) While You’re in College 4) Preparing for Graduation and the Job Search Process. This resource is intended for multiple audiences including but not limited to current and prospective college students with conviction records, college and universities personnel including admissions advisors, academic advisors, career counselors, and many more! • Developing mindset, life skills and access to education is integral to the development of previously incarcerated people and their ability to find employment on release. This program is a good start. “Laguardia Community College is teaching Rikers Island detainees practical law and self-development tools in the first college program ever offered at Rikers’ George R. Vierno Center, which houses men charged with serious felonies. The course’s graduates call the experience ‘transformational.’” -- the Gothamist
