More than 400,000 fall-run Chinook #salmon released in the Sacramento River at Butte City on Saturday, March 23 - a site identified in our joint project with recent good return results. Thanks to everyone involved: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Golden State Salmon Association, the Nor-Cal Guides & Sportsmens Association, UC Davis, and the Bureau of Reclamation who came together on this study. #fish #CAwater

Scott Artis, executive director of the Golden State Salmon Assn., blamed Newsom and his administration for “disastrous state water management decisions that dramatically increased the impact of the drought” from 2000 to 2022. He said those decisions have meant inadequate flows and high water temperatures, and he called on Newsom to “guarantee adequate cold flows in our rivers.”

We welcome increased hatchery production and are excited to see improvements on the Feather River and other actions in Governor Newsom's Salmon Plan released today. However, the Plan conflicts with what the #Newsom Administration has been doing for years to devastate California's most important #salmon runs. Is this conveniently-timed smoke and mirrors? https://lnkd.in/eENqWzY7

“We are witnessing the creation of the next endangered species: the salmon families across California and Oregon who rely on the health of our fishery for their living, their community, and their culture. The Delta tunnel is one of the biggest salmon-killing projects in state history, and Governor Newsom has his hand directly on the spigot. The governor is doing everything he can to divert water away from our rivers, fish, and people in a vain effort to appease an insatiable industrial agricultural thirst. The salmon industry is already suffering from the Newsom fishing shutdown. California salmon fishing was completely closed in 2023, and is likely to be closed in 2024, because the governor mismanaged our rivers during the drought.” - Scott Artis, GSSA https://lnkd.in/ecNYwW76

"Small businesses in Sonoma County and 30 other California counties may now apply for federal disaster loans based on the economic impact of this year’s #salmon fishery closure. The fishery closure occurred April 6 to Oct. 31. On April 6, Gov. Gavin Newsom asked the federal government in April to declare a federal fishery disaster. The U.S. Small Business Administration acted under its own authority Dec. 1, to declare a disaster to help a beleaguered industry." To qualify for assistance: Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at SBA.gov/disaster. Applicants may call SBA’s Customer Service Center (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. The actual amount of each loan is limited to the economic injury determined by the SBA, less business interruption insurance and other recoveries up to the administrative lending limit. The deadline to apply is August 29, 2024. https://lnkd.in/ep4fnvRm #CaliforniaSalmon #SmallBusinessAdministration #CaliforniaWater #FederalDisaster #CaliforniaFisheries

On December 12, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (#CDFW) announced $14 million in grants across 8 counties to protect, restore and enhance the freshwater habitats of #salmon and steelhead in northern California. Golden State Salmon Association’s Scott Artis said, “We applaud CDFW’s support of projects to restore and enhance salmon habitat. It’s an important step towards achieving healthy runs that maintain coastal and in-river fishing industry businesses and the ecosystems that rely on robust salmon populations. However, it is imperative that we not let this good restoration work go to waste. Functional salmon habitat requires cold water. Without protected temperatures and flows to support salmon, you end up with dismal returns and closed salmon seasons like we are witnessing right now.” https://lnkd.in/etezFj-Y

For those new to salmon and our restoration efforts, you may notice that GSSA regularly mentions Chinook Salmon in our posts. Did you know they hatch in freshwater streams and rivers before migrating to the ocean’s saltwater to feed and grow? They then return to their natal streams or rivers to spawn, generally in summer or early fall, which is why GSSA fights against bad water policy that eliminates and diverts the cold water these fish need to survive and thrive. Chinook Salmon are also known as “king salmon,” due to being the largest of the Pacific Salmon. For those experienced salmon anglers, did you know fish coming from the Coleman Hatchery must swim 280 miles of river to reach the ocean? #PacificSalmon #GSSA #GoldenStateSalmonAssociation #ChinookSalmon #CaliforniaSalmon
