October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Unemployment is an issue that disproportionately impacts people with disabilities. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is 9.1% – which is more than twice that of folks without disabilities, 4.3%, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. Goodwill NNE is committed to helping people with disabilities find and keep good jobs, and helping local businesses hire people with disabilities 💙 Our community is fortunate to have dedicated organizations that provide disability resources and focus on advocacy. There are many great examples, but here are some of our favorites 😉 ✅ Goodwill Northern New England ✅ Maine Department of Labor ✅ Disability Rights Maine ✅ Disability Rights Center - NH ✅ Disability Rights Vermont ✅ Employment for ME ✅ New England ADA Center ✅ Maine Association for Community Service Providers Follow the accounts above and let us know who we missed in the comments ⬇️ Sources: https://lnkd.in/ekqwCQH7. https://lnkd.in/eMufzR3J https://lnkd.in/e4VJRwez #MoreThanJustAStore #NDEAM #NationalDisabilityEmploymentAwarenessMonth #WorkforceDevelopment #CommunityResources

About us
Goodwill Northern New England is a nonprofit that invests in people who need support to achieve their work and life goals. Goodwill NNE revenues fund our workforce and disability services, which support more than 10,000 people each year. Of course, our stores also embody our mission to support the Earth through re-use, while offering good jobs and work and life supports to all of our teammates. Headquartered in Gorham, Maine, Goodwill NNE has a three-state service area comprised of Maine, New Hampshire and nine northern counties in Vermont. Our services include workforce training programs, 16 group homes that support adults with disabilities, active community supports for adults with disabilities, AmeriCorps programs, two brain injury clinics to help people get back to their lives after a brain injury and more. Goodwill NNE is more than *just* a store. We are good people doing good in our communities. Come work with us. We have a lot of fun. And we feel pretty good when we put our heads on the pillow at night.

Meet Victoria! 👋 Victoria was looking for a new place to work when she discovered a dining assistant position at Quarry Hill. A few months into Victoria’s new role, a nurse at Quarry Hill suggested she become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) — a higher-paying job, that felt more meaningful. Victoria connected with the Workforce Solutions team and received the emotional and financial support she needed. 🩺 She enrolled in a CNA program through Central Lincoln County Adult Education in partnership with MaineHealth, with help from Workforce Solutions. Workforce Solutions paid for Victoria’s tuition, uniforms, work shoes and a watch for the program. Now, Victoria splits her time working as a CNA at Quarry Hill and Waldo County General Hospital. She found a career that she enjoys. “One of the things that I really took away from Workforce Solutions was that even if I felt like I had no one to go to for help,” Victoria said. “Help with whatever it may be, Workforce Solutions was always there.” Learn more about Victoria's story and how Goodwill can help you find the right job at https://lnkd.in/eytqX5u8 #MoreThanJustAStore #GoodwillNNE #WorkforceDevelopment #Nonprofit #Maine

🤟 Sept. 22-28 is Deaf Culture Week, and we want to highlight a recent accomplishment of a Goodwill Northern New England employee who is Deaf: Julie Novack. Julie is our LifeWorks Deaf Services Program Manager and has been with Goodwill for 18 years. The Maine Department of Labor’s Commission for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened presented Julie with the Promoting American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and Deaf People Award this past week. In honoring her, the Commission shared, “Julie has been a pivotal force in empowering the Deaf+ community, ensuring that those often overlooked are not forgotten. Her collaboration with the Peer Support Group, providing essential transportation and support, has made a significant difference in the lives of many. Thanks to her efforts, Deaf+ individuals are now actively engaged and socializing within the broader Deaf community.” Julie is involved in many events and fundraising activities including the Trashion Show, Disability Pride Day and Pine Tree Camp. She creates inclusive experiences for all participants and is known to bring joy and fun to every gathering. Julie was recognized for her unwavering dedication and passion for fostering connection and support in the community. The Lewiston tragedy last October reignited a deep need for Julie to reconnect with the Deaf Community. During this pivotal time, her children were older, and she felt she could return to her passion for giving back. “The support and resilience of Maine’s Deaf community during that time reminded me of the importance of our collective strength, and it motivated me to jump back in and serve in whatever way I could,” Julie signed in her acceptance speech. “To Maine’s Deaf community, thank you for your trust, your strength, and your unwavering spirit,” Julie signed. “This award belongs to all of us, and I am so grateful to be part of such an incredible, supportive community.” Congratulations, Julie, on this well-deserved award! We’re grateful for all you do for the Deaf Community and are so lucky to have you at Goodwill NNE 💙 Looking for ways to celebrate Deaf Culture Week? There will be a Deaf Culture Festival at Mackworth Island on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Learn more about LifeWorks Deaf Services on our website, https://lnkd.in/eqeTpgAX #MoreThanJustAStore #DeafCultureWeek #GoodwillNNE #DeafCommunity #Nonprofit #Maine

Goodwill Northern New England reposted this
Goodwill Northern New England teamed up with ReSupply to offer a donation pick-up service (starting in the Portland, Maine area, Biddeford to Brunswick). You make an appointment online, tell them what you need gone, and they give you a price and come take it away — even if it's bulky and up flights of stairs, and even if they need to disassemble it for you. They do this at a price that's often less than trash haulers AND you get tax-deductible donation receipts. (Goodwill does not make any money from their fees, which they use to pay the drivers, etc.) They'll bring your couches and chairs to Goodwill, but if we can't accept something (like a used mattress, or cans of paint), they then bring it to another nonprofit to see if they can make use of it. They try to divert as much as they can to local nonprofits before going to the landfills. Not everyone has a truck or the physical ability to remove their bulky items from their homes, so I'm excited we can offer this. That said: it's not free, but our donation centers always are <3 https://lnkd.in/e6k_z9JU #Reuse #Maine #Sustainability

We're excited to bring another option for #donating to our communities! Of course, donation centers will *always* be an option, too. 💙 #MoreThanJustAStore #GoodwillNNE #DonationPickups #CircularEconomy
Donating home goods, clothing and furniture in Maine is getting easier thanks to a new partnership between Goodwill Northern New England and ReSupply. https://ow.ly/twhh50TpbJh

At checkout, sales associates ask our customers to “round up” their change to the nearest dollar to support Goodwill’s workforce programs, disability services, and sustainability efforts. As a 501c3 nonprofit, we rely on donor support to help people in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont achieve personal stability. We also count on support from United Way. Starting today through Sept. 21, Goodwill’s Round Up funds will be donated to your local United Way as a thank-you for their long-term support. Together, United Way and Goodwill NNE work and volunteer to help people reach their work and life goals. Find a Goodwill store near you at GoodwillNNE.org/Locations. Thank you for your support! #GoodwillNNE #MoreThanJustAStore #Nonprofit
