Looking for your first 100 customers? Your first 1,000 customers? Daryna Kulya, Co-founder of OpenPhone, gave us her playbook on episode #66 of the Optimize podcast. This was a fun episode. I love chatting with other Y Combinator founders and am a huge fan of OpenPhone's go-to-market motion. Daryna walks us through the early days when she had to brute force GTM on a shoestring budget. And, of course, I had to ask about the fantastic content marketing and SEO strategy that they've built. Listen to this week's episode to hear more about: - The First 100 Customers — Facebook groups and Reddit? Daryna and I chatted through some unscalable methods she used to get in front of a diverse set of early customers. We go on to chat about their private beta and how they transitioned those early users into paying customers. - From 100 to 1,000 — OK, now we need to scale. We chat about that second phase of growth. Word of mouth, wonderful customer support, press, and content marketing. As Daryna put it, the company shifted from sales to marketing and grew quickly. - Content & SEO — OpenPhone has built an incredible content / SEO channel. Daryna walks us through the early days of building the channel and explains that for a company like OpenPhone, it was clear that content marketing could be an important channel from the very beginning. The episode is available wherever you listen to podcasts and on YouTube!

We just launched Positional on Product Hunt! It has been a long time coming, and we'd love for you to support the launch! 📈 Matthew Lenhard and I have been working on Positional for about 18 months. As you might know, we pivoted to get here. We pivoted to what we know best: content marketing and SEO We've tried to build the toolset we've always wanted — the toolset that would help teams start and scale SEO strategies. Thank you to all of our early customers who took a chance on us and provided such great feedback. It has been so helpful. 💙

My co-founder, Matthew Lenhard, and I have been working together for about a decade. A couple of companies. Highs and lows. There is not much that we have yet to do together. And this week, I did something that I've never done before. I interviewed Matt on the Optimize podcast. 🤯 Episode #61 is a fun one. Matt and I chatted about AI Overviews, and Matt shared a few fascinating insights from a recent study he conducted. If you don't know Matt, know that Matt is the Co-founder and CTO of Positional, a company building a fantastic toolset for content marketing and SEO. Listen to this week’s episode to hear more about: - AI Overviews — Matt gives us a breakdown of AI Overviews, and explains how they work. Included, Matt highlights a recent patent from Google that might give us some clues as to their interworkings. - The Data — Matt shares some really interesting data from an analysis of 500 search queries. While it is a smaller sample size, Matt found that the #1 search result was 55% more likely to be pulled in as an AIO source versus the #2 search result. And the #2 search result was 90% more likely to be pulled in as an AIO source versus the #9 search result. - Optimizing for Placement in an AIO — Matt and I talk theoretically about how you might be able to optimize for placement in an AIO. We actually ran an experiment with a few pages on our website, and it appears to have worked, at least initially. Next week, we've got another episode in our series of episodes outside of SEO. I'm talking to Jonny Price of Wefunder about community rounds and how they can be used as a GTM and growth lever. That episode will drop on 8/7.

50 episodes in, and things are really heating up on the Optimize podcast. Matthew Kay joined me for this week's episode and it was a fun one. We chatted about technical SEO, reporting, B2B SaaS SEO, and so much more. Matthew is a growth marketing consultant and the Technical SEO Lead at Growth Plays, where he leads all technical SEO, auditing, reporting, and analytics. Technical SEO hasn't been a big focus for us on the podcast thus far. So, I was really excited to ask Matthew some pressing questions about technical SEO mistakes, audits, and the work that he is doing with his clients, who are often scaling B2B SaaS startups. Listen to this week’s episode to hear more about: - Technical SEO — Matthew shares insights into the technical side of SEO, highlighting how small, strategic changes can significantly affect a site's performance. Don't get me started on internal linking! - Algorithm Updates — Matthew gives us his perspective on the recent volatility we've seen in the SERPs. We go on to chat about creating high-quality and authoritative content. - Audits — We chatted through Matthew's process and approach to SEO audits and reporting. Next week, we will chat with Nate Saienni about building SEO channels, AI overviews, content optimization, and more! This episode will air on 5/22.

It is getting hot in here, and on 3/26, things are going to get even hotter. Next week, we are launching publicly. To celebrate, we are releasing a very limited edition trio of Positional hot sauces. 🌶 Of course, the hot sauces are SEO-inspired: - "Link Juice" — a colorful blend of habanero and jalapeño heat. Backlinks are still really important when it comes to ranking in organic search. And we all need just a little link juice. - "SERP Sizzle" — a chipotle-inspired hot sauce. Just a little bit. The little things in SEO can have a big impact. - "Topical Authority" — a Carolina Reaper blend. This one is really hot. Building topical authority is so important when it comes to getting Google's attention. Matthew Lenhard and I's office is currently filled with hot sauce. To get yours, sign up for Positional anytime from 3/26 to 3/29. There will be a free trial, but you actually need to become a subscriber. New active paying customers as of 4/8 (my birthday FYI) will be contacted for shipping info. The shipping address must be in the USA.

In 2024, you shouldn’t expect to target a single keyword or long-tail keyword and expect to rank. Instead, you should capitalize on all of the keywords and related keywords for your niche or service. Enhance your keyword research strategy and improve your content with keyword clustering! Keyword Clustering finds and organizes related keywords into clusters based on their meaning and context. You can use this data to create lists for future content opportunities or directly optimize your existing content portfolio. A great way to improve your on-page SEO would be to include these keyword clusters in your headers (h2/h3/h4) and body content to help provide your audience with the next layer of information for a given query. Check out the product carousel below for an overview of our Keyword Clustering toolset, and then visit our website to get started today!
