In the last decade, Nvidia has poached thousands of employees from Intel as the once-great chipmaker continues to flail. Intel alumni make up almost 10% of Nvidia's current employees – the most out of any previous company (for comparison ~3% of Nvidia's current employees are Qualcomm alumni). The two companies represent the extremes of the AI-driven chip craze. As Nvidia continues to grow and Intel continues to struggle, how many more Intel employees will upgrade to Nvidia? 🚨 BREAKING: State of the Design Job Market 2024. Biggest surprises and takeaways: 1. Increased Demand for Designers I was surprised to see that UX design roles have grown by 29.2% since 2019, reflecting a strong demand for user experience professionals. Companies prioritize user experience more than ever, leading to a wealth of opportunities for skilled professionals in this area. This trend is likely to continue as software become increasingly central to business strategies. 2. Emphasis on Soft Skills It was eye-opening to learn that employers are increasingly valuing soft skills alongside technical abilities. With 67.9% of designers securing new roles within three months in 2019 dropping to 49.5% in 2024, effective communication and collaboration are becoming critical differentiators in a competitive market. This shift highlights the need for designers to cultivate interpersonal skills to stand out. 3. Rise of Freelance Opportunities The growth of freelance work in the design sector caught my attention as well, with many designers opting for flexible gigs that allow for varied experiences. This trend suggests that traditional employment models may evolve, allowing designers to take control of their career paths. The report indicates that companies outside traditional tech, like JPMorgan hiring 62 UX designers, are also ramping up their investment in design talent. 4. Opportunities Beyond Big Tech Companies I found it fascinating that industries outside of traditional tech are ramping up their investment in UX design, with sectors like finance and healthcare recognizing its value. Notably, JPMorgan has hired 62 UX designers, surpassing some tech companies in their recruitment efforts. This encourages me to broaden my job search beyond just tech companies for exciting opportunities. 5. Landing Roles Takes Longer Lastly, I was surprised to discover that many designers are experiencing longer job searches than in previous years, with the percentage of designers finding new roles within three months dropping from 67.9% in 2019 to 49.5% in 2024. This decline highlights that designers are taking longer to land new positions due to increased competition and selectivity among employers. Patience and persistence are essential in navigating today’s job market challenges. Something crazy happened last year... For the first time in 20+ years, more software engineers left their jobs (voluntarily or involuntarily) than started new roles. Following a chaotic last 24 months, what is the State of the Software Engineering Job Market in 2024? I partnered with Gergely Orosz to analyze the latest job change data for software engineers. How do you make 1+1+1 = 3.54x10¹²? Relax, it's as simple as AWS Trainium AI + Databricks + MosaicML. Databricks' 2023 addition of MosaicML, designed to dramatically reduce the cost barrier for bespoke genAI models, is already yielding more than the sum of its parts. Add in the final piece of the puzzle, AWS chips powering their service, and we're in exponential territory. Speaking of simple additions producing astronomical results, #Amazon has slowly been pulling top chip talent from some of the world's premier companies, like #Apple #Intel #Microsoft and #IBM. HW/SW/design/process engineers, even a Quantum Hardware Engineer? Way beyond my pay grade, but they've been investing heavily into good people and the good people are paying them back tenfold. Amazon and Databricks didn't share financial terms of the deal, but I bet it contains a lot of 0's (and 1's). Talk about Prime numbers!
