🎉 We are incredibly excited to announce our $10m Series A round, led by Footwork with participation from Reach Capital, Uncork Capital, Neo, and Alt Capital. The last year has been unforgettable for Alex Cui and me. We owe much of it to the incredible team of people, diverse, kind, and inspiring human beings we get to work with every day. Working with Nikhil and Mike is really special, from the first time I met Nikhil (https://lnkd.in/gnQMYzN5) to hearing about Mike's legendary runs as COO twice-over. Even yesterday, when Mike was grabbing lunch with our team, he shared that some of his best hires were the ones who were kind and humble. That’s the type of company we want to build. If you’re passionate about building a future with responsible and transparent adoption of AI, join our team! (https://lnkd.in/ewGUwsNs) Thanks to the amazing people who have believed and supported us on this journey, and even more excited for the next year 🚀 https://lnkd.in/g3wwd4mn Nikhil Basu Trivedi, Mike Smith, James Kim, Tripp Jones, Ali Partovi Jack Altman Russ Heddleston Tom Glocer Ruslan Salakhutdinov Adrien Treuille Suzanne Xie Amy Saper Enzo Cavalie Wayee Chu Jim Lobdell Tony Wan Adriana Roche Andy McLoughlin Jeff Clavier Sara Du Stephen Cornwell Emily Cohen Sarah Du Ayushi Sinha Kelvin Yu Vincent Po Umesh Khanna John Taysom Alex Mashrabov Jeff Herbst

Our investigation into the frequency of AI-generated sources on Perplexity was just covered on the front pages of Forbes. This, alongside our previous work with the New York Times in monitoring AI books on Amazon, are critical reminders of the importance of supporting journalism. AI owes, and continues to be dependent on newsrooms and original reporting. Incredibly proud of the team at GPTZero for this work! Thanks and shoutouts to Rashi Shrivastava Elizabeth A. Harris Tom Glocer Nikhil Basu Trivedi Ali Partovi Tripp Jones Aimee Rinehart Ruslan Salakhutdinov
Forbes has learned that AI search engine Perplexity is also regularly citing AI-generated blogs that contain inaccurate, out of date and sometimes contradictory information as being authoritative. It wasn’t supposed to be that way: Perplexity scrapes real-time information from the internet and uses a mix of large language models to generate short summaries on any topic, with an eye to producing the best results from the web. But a study conducted by AI content detection platform GPTZero, Perplexity’s search engine is drawing information from and citing AI-generated posts on a wide variety of topics including travel, sports, food, technology and politics. In one example we noted, it provided contradictory information about whether patients allergic to penicillin could use a particular alternative. Zak Shumaylov, a machine learning researcher at the University of Cambridge, said that when an AI model is trained on AI-generated data, it risks “model collapse” where it starts “spewing nonsense because there is no longer information.” This poses yet another problem for the beleaguered AI startup, already under scrutiny for plagiarizing journalistic work from multiple news outlets including Forbes, CNBC and Bloomberg and from a Wired report that found it was evading safeguards that should have prevented it from scraping certain websites.
