Building minds through play since 1997.
About us
The Grand Rapids Children's Museum is two floors of hands-on interactive exhibits and daily drop-in programs that encourage discovery and learning through play. Founded in 1992 by four community members, GRCM began as a "museum without walls" until overwhelming community support inspired the board of directors to begin searching for a permanent home. In February of 1994, GRCM received its current building in downtown Grand Rapids as a gift. In July of 1997 it opened the doors to its new home. The philosophy of GRCM is based on the principle that children learn best when they direct their own learning. GRCM's programs are designed with the purpose of educating the whole child -- encompassing all subject areas as well as the individual learning styles of children preschool through elementary school age. GRCM's exhibits and programs consist of materials and activities that are participatory; and hands-on. GRCM's active learning approach encourages play and self-directed exploration in a supportive environment, enabling children to gain a positive sense of themselves as learners. To summarize, the Grand Rapids Children's Museum is an environment for play, advocates for the value of play, and builds minds through play.

Have you explored Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out? This exhibit is on display until September 8, so there's still time to come play! ✨
We are currently hosting the exhibit Emotions at Play - the first interactive exhibit based on the Disney and Pixar feature Inside Out. As an extension beyond school and home, children's museums remain an important space in our communities to learn, explore, create, and start conversations. Research has proven, and as our fearless leader at the Association of Children's Museums, Arthur G. Affleck, III reiterates every day, the most meaningful learning takes place when it is child-led, and children learn best through PLAY! Today, in the The New York Times, an article on Emotions at Play showcased photos of our very own Grand Rapids Children's Museum. Thank you to the brilliant photographer, Julie Balgavy, for taking the photos, and the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh for being a tremendous museum partner (and for building this exhibit). Emotions at Play is locally made possible in part by a grant from Michigan Humanities (an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts). Article link: https://lnkd.in/g7E4V_E5 I hope you can see it before it heads out on September 8th!
