Grants work. ⬇ $20 Million in Grants to Expand Job Access for Underserved Youth The U.S. Department of Labor has announced up to $20 million in grants to help out-of-school time organizations expand job training, work-based learning, and career pathways for underserved youth ages 14-21. Through partnerships, these grants will provide paid employment opportunities, occupational skills training, and supportive services such as transportation. The grants awarded from the Workforce Pathways for Youth program align with the current administration's focus on creating good job opportunities and aims to equip youth with foundational skills for future success. People sometimes have a perplexed look on their faces when I explain what I do. It usually goes something like… So, what kind of business do you own? I’m the CEO of a federal grant consulting firm. Oh, you help people get grants. Yes, that too, but most importantly, we help them *keep* their grants. We specialize in federal grant compliance, we find compliance gaps, we help them manage their federal grants, and we train their teams and other stakeholders. Then I explain that sometimes when organizations receive federal grants, they need the support of consultants with grant administration experience to help them avoid misuse, fraud, underspends, etc.                                        That’s when it becomes clear. It’s often during the engagement kickoff that it becomes especially clear to some of our clients how we support them. Here’s a note we received immediately after an engagement kickoff from one of our current clients—the PI on an NSF grant awarded to a science organization.... “We are grateful for your expertise and guidance as we work to meet the requirements set by NSF for our grant.“ If your organization is new to federal grants or it has federal grant experience but is new to being pass-through entities, I invite you to join me next Wednesday, July 31st for the first of six monthly LinkedIn Live events. It’s been just a few weeks since we launched a quiz to help people gauge how effective their federal grants management process is. I realize the results don’t tell the whole story, but I thought it was a fun way to help federal grantees assess how well their grants are being managed. One of the questions asks about oversight of the award budget. That’s always a fun one to ask. I’m often surprised at some of the responses I get when I ask that question at speaking events or during our training sessions. One of my favorite things to do as a federal grant consultant is.... ⬇ Conduct site visits. Why? Because that's when I get to see some of the awesome and innovative work that is made possible with federal grants. Here I am after I just finalized our team's site visit plans for one of our clients. Why do we conduct site visits? Well, it's one of the ways that our clients who have subawardees monitor their subawardees. I'll be hosting a LinkedIn Live event next Wednesday, July 31st at 12:00pm ET where I'll talk about the responsibilities of pass-through entities. What's a pass-through entity you may ask? When I was the fiscal consultant during site monitoring visits of federal grantees, I quickly learned that this is often the approach taken and I also learned some of the pitfalls of that approach.
