COP29 kicks off next week! From the 11th - 22nd of November, the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) will bring world leaders, climate experts, and activists to @COP29 Azerbaijan under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to confront the planet’s pressing environmental challenges. To cap global warming at 1.5°C, this year’s summit will focus on climate finance, energy transition, and new climate pledges — three critical points to move us toward a more sustainable future. What’s on the Agenda? - New Climate Finance Goals: 2009’s $100 billion commitment to climate finance was only just achieved, making a 2025 goal of potentially $1 trillion a pivotal topic. New pathways for financing will be under scrutiny. - Green Energy Transition: Last year’s COP acknowledged the need to move away from fossil fuels, but true action is lagging. With CO₂ and methane levels reaching unprecedented highs, COP29 needs to push beyond recognition to tackle this critical issue. - New Emission Pledges (NDCs): By COP30, nations will submit their updated NDCs. This year, we expect strong commitments from past, current, and future hosts UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil, with hopes for significant pledges from other major players. - Context Matters: This COP returns on the heels of a year marked by climate extremes, social unrest, and the recent U.S. election that could shift the global climate agenda. The UK, under new leadership, is also expected to present a reinvigorated climate stance. We are now midway through a critical decade for climate action, and COP29 represents a decisive moment for the world, in renewable energy and the wider climate community. 📣 Do you have a renewable energy success story you'd like to share with our editorial team? Geek Chic With Heat Whilst the urgency to decarbonise the UK’s energy system grows, inspiring digital leader - Adam Chapman, founder of Heat Geek is driving meaningful change by focusing on practical, local solutions to our heating and energy challenges. Adam Chapman is a man on a mission to revolutionise how the UK heats its homes. Through his digital start up - Heat Geek - he’s working to make low-carbon heating systems like heat pumps accessible to all and understood by all. He aims to make heat pumps as common as gas boilers, drastically cutting emissions and keeping homes warm. The key lies in education: Heat Geek is offering training for installers, information for homeowners, with guaranteed efficiency, ensuring everyone can easily transition to greener heating solutions. Fighting for green energy, Adam understands that for the UK to successfully decarbonise, solutions need to be accessible and relatable. “I like to fix problems, I have been a heating engineer for 20 years. The truth is, we have the solution to decarbonising home heating – and it’s heat pumps. The problem is getting them to work well in all situations, and all that’s needed to make this happen is in our training. To understand that is to understand the whole problem. Everything else is just noise.” Adam’s leadership reminds us that communities, individuals and businesses play vital roles in building a cleaner, more sustainable future to tackle climate change. We can all play our part. Good News Story: The Kensa Group - manufacturer and installer of award-winning, British-made, ground source heat pumps, have joined forces with GTC - installer and operator of last mile multi-utility networks, in one of the largest UK agreements between a utility infrastructure provider, GSHP manufacturer and solutions provider. The partnership aims to deliver a low-cost renewable heating and cooling solution for tens of thousands of new-build homes across the UK. Introducing the Networked GSHP solution. Project aim: - Help developers and housebuilders transition to clean and cost-effective heating and cooling, who must stop new gas connections under Future Homes Standards, without the need for additional electricity grid capacity - Bring to market a complete end-to-end heating, hot water, and cooling solution for housebuilders - GSHPS are up to five times more efficient than gas and use very little space in the house, with no need for an outside unit By joining forces, Kensa group and GTC aim to help UK housebuilders and developers transition to a proven, sustainable, low-carbon heating solution in line with the planned phase-out of gas. It will offer home buyers a lower-carbon, more efficient alternative to individual air source heat pumps. The Networked GSHP solution can also be used to heat and cool any non-domestic buildings within a development. Good News Story: Scientists from The University of Edinburgh have created SeaWarm, a home heating system that taps into the world’s most abundant resource: water. This innovative system can utilise sea water, rivers, ponds, and even mine water to heat radiators and provide hot water for baths and showers, employing technology similar to air source heat pumps. The aim is to offer a green energy solution to replace traditional gas and oil-powered heating. Since water is more predictable than air, due to its consistent temperature, this new technology is sustainable, reliable and easily maintained. Effective even in cold conditions, SeaWarm can even utilise frozen water, highlighting its adaptability to various environments. Key facts: - Currently more affordable than ground source heat pumps, SeaWarm delivers a heating and cooling system with running costs comparable to mains gas. - Delivers 350% to 400% more heat than the electricity they consume, comparable to the most efficient air source heat pumps.  - One third or less the CO2 footprint of fossil fuels Join us to share - and hear about - renewable energy projects from our network in the coming months. 🤝 Sign up: https://lnkd.in/ePmZPs3A #GreenVoices #Renewables #RenewableEnergySolutions #GreenEnergy #RES

Good News Story:        Valencia, on the east coast of Spain is starting to install thousands of solar panels in its cemeteries around the city to generate renewable power, in a project dubbed ‘RIP’ (Requiem in Power). To make sure they weren’t walking over anyone’s graves, they sought permission from the Catholic Diocese, who supported the idea. At the heart of Valencia, three cemeteries at Grau, Campanar, and Benimàmet will be outfitted with 7,000 panels to create the largest urban solar farm in Spain. These will generate a total power supply of more than 440,000 kilowatts per year, used to power municipal buildings, with 25% also going to 1,000 vulnerable households. There will be a saving per year of over 140 tons of carbon dioxide too. In an effort to speed up the green energy transition, Europeans are coming up with more and more inventive ways to install solar panels, including inside the terracotta roof tiles typical of a historic Italian or Greek roof, or on over 100,000 balconies and terraces in Germany. Our mission is to amplify these projects of green energy’s innovation and successes: joining our network to share your renewable energy solution and add momentum to the energy transition. 🤝 Sign up: https://lnkd.in/ePmZPs3A #GreenVoices #Renewables #RenewableEnergySolutions #GreenEnergy #RES

The latest statistics released in May 2024 from Ocean Energy Europe highlight a significant acceleration in the ocean energy sector. The trade body reports that 137MW of tidal and wave energy projects are set for deployment within the next five years, supported by EU funding and national revenue initiatives. France and the UK have introduced per/kWh support for tidal farms, boosting the tidal energy pipeline to 127MW over the same period. Wave energy is also making strides in technological readiness, as evidenced by increased private investment in current projects. Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The latest statistics released by Ocean Energy Europe show clearly that the UK’s marine energy industry has a bright future and it is encouraging to see the projects we have in development making such substantial progress towards commercial deployment." Ocean Energy aims to provide 10% of Europe’s current electricity needs by 2050, enough to power 94 million households per year.
