Those who stay in their homes to face a hurricane are often labeled brave, or stubborn. But some have no other choice. Evacuating can be costly and laborious, often prohibitively so. https://lnkd.in/gm4BPu5i

About 7 months ago, I approached author Premee Mohamed to see if she would write a climate fiction story for Grist. She sent in this delightful piece about a young woman getting separated from her nomadic city during a storm. It was a joy for me to edit this story, and now everyone can read it! https://lnkd.in/gYEgZHSX

I'm a reporter who covers climate change and energy. I am working on a book about the evolution of the oil and agriculture industries in Kern County, California.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has voted against refilling FEMA's disaster fund. She's called to defund and restaff the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She's blasted the Biden administration on every conceivable issue. But now that Hurricanes Helene and Milton have caused billions of dollars of damage in her district—the same segment of Tampa Bay where I grew up, and where decades had gone by without a major hurricane making landfall—she's singing a different tune, praising Biden and urging Speaker Mike Johnson to pass more FEMA funding. The latest State of Emergency dispatch from myself and Zoya Teirstein in Grist, on the politics of Hurricane Milton in purple Pinellas County.

Thrilled to have kicked off the launch of Grist's second climate fiction anthology (published by Milkweed Editions), Metamorphosis: Climate Fiction for a Better Future, with a lively discussion at The Center for Fiction alongside Louis Evans, Jamie Liu, and Susan Kaye Quinn! Doing these live events and diving into the power of storytelling with other storytellers is one of the most rewarding parts of this whole endeavor. Missed the discussion? Catch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/dAiJmWUg Intrigued by climate futures?
