Throughout history, we’ve repeatedly believed that true machine intelligence was just around the corner. But time and time again, we’ve moved the goalpost. When we first built calculators, people thought, “This is it! Intelligence is here!” - Because before that, solving basic math problems required human thought. Then we built computers that could beat the best chess players in the world, and again, we thought, “Now we’re on the verge of intelligence.” Then we conquered Go, a game exponentially more complex than chess, and people said, “Well, this has to be it. Intelligence is finally here.” And now, we’ve reached the age of language models. Because language is so central to how we communicate, think, and express ourselves, it’s easy to assume that we must be on the final step. But there are still fundamental challenges ahead, hard steps that remain unsolved. If you think about it, there was a time when beating the Turing Test was considered a benchmark for intelligence. Today, some say the real test is whether AI can generate a million dollars. Tomorrow, what will the bar be?
