Someone had to say it 🤷♂️ Starchitecture is real. Starchitects are not. Stop perpetuating the myth of the starchitect. It takes a village of skilled professionals to create starchitecture. Not just one person’s ego.

It’s easy to focus on growth. But it’s hard to avoid tunnel vision. As you grow professionally, don’t neglect your social and relational growth. If your great architecture career means a terrible personal life, then you're moving in the wrong direction.

Profit in architecture is taboo.  Design is the hero.  And it’s destroyed the industry. Here's why: Because design and profit are understood as mutually exclusive. With the exception of starchitects, most feel that in order to execute their vision, they must compromise profit. They must charge lower fees for the ideal project. They must allow scope creep to please the client.  They must eat the additional costs of greater design. Guess what this produces? More work hours.  Lower salaries.  Less benefits. Profit isn’t the enemy. It’s a catalyst for change. If you continue to ignore it, everything suffers. Your business.  Your employees.  Your culture. THE INDUSTRY. Unlearn the separation of design + profit. Focus on their alignment. Understand how profit is generated. You CAN create incredible designs AND operate a profitable firm. 🙂 --- 👆Click the “Subscribe to my newsletter” link under my name for free architecture business growth hacks 👆

My favorite timing secret for architects 🤫 Let's look at the data: Do you find yourself struggling to make decisions at the end of the day? Well you're not alone. It's from a psychological phenomenon known as decision fatigue. And it's backed by science. The premise is simple: You're more fresh and open-minded at the beginning of the day. You're more exhausted and close-minded at the end of the day. And so are your clients. So schedule your client meetings early in the day and limit the amount of decisions they need to make in those meetings :) --- Want more? I spent 25 years of my life chasing perfectionism. But perfectionists don’t get anything done. Why? Nothing is ever perfect. Literally nothing. It will never happen. So if you keep waiting to do something until it’s perfect, well, you’ll be waiting forever. And if you evaluate everything you do against perfection, you’ll be endlessly disappointed. Both of those outcomes suck. So I threw out perfectionism. And embraced imperfection. Now I make mistakes ALL THE TIME. But guess what? It’s 10 steps forward and one step back. Perfectionism is one step forward and 10 steps back. Progress over perfection is the only way forward. --- ✍ Have you ventured beyond perfectionism or is it an ongoing struggle?

Architects: Sales is not about selling. Sales is about solving. Remove the picture from your mind that a salesperson is some sleazy guy from a 1970s car dealership that will tell you whatever you want to hear as long as you buy a car. That is not sales. That’s just greed. Nobody wants that. You are the expert that can evaluate whether or not your firm is the best solution to a problem (because you see the same problems over and over). You’re not the right solution? Refer them to another firm. You are the best solution? Awesome, you will make their lives infinitely better. --- ♻️ Repost if this is helpful 🔗 Click the link below my name to join 10k+ architects reading my free newsletter every Sunday morning :)
