Grus Construction Personnel started with one man, Mr. Jon Bailey. Before Grus evolved as a staffing agency, its roots began as the idea of a tradesman and inventor. Jon worked as a contractor under the company name ‘Bailey Construction Company’, running multiple crews and jobsites. Bailey Construction Company had about 50 employees at that time and owned its own truck crane, which Jon operated. Bailey Construction Company was busy, and had enough jobs running simultaneously that Jon was not able to transport the crane to every jobsite. Jon then came up with a patent-worthy invention of a portable crane that the foremen could strap to their trucks easily. This would later take him to Washington D.C. for approval. Once the patent office issued his patent, Jon needed a corporation to manufacture and market the portable crane under. Jon sat down with a dictionary and began turning the pages to see if any of the words sparked his interest. Jon wanted a unique name so that it could not be copied. He started at the beginning of the dictionary and read every page until he got to the word “grus”. Many people may think it is an acronym (I myself thought it was Great, Reliable, & Unified Staffing) but the true origin may surprise you! Grus, as defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “a southern constellation that is visible between the constellations of Piscis Austrinus and Tucana and that is represented by the figure of a crane.” Jon chose the name ‘Grus Inc.’ for his invention and turned it into a corporation. However, soon afterwards a manufacturer offered Jon a royalty agreement and assumed control of the manufacturing and marketing of the portable crane. One year later, Jon wanted to give new life to the Grus name and started a construction personnel staffing company. At that time, there was a need to establish a corporation name for this new staffing company. Thus, “Grus Inc.” became “Grus Construction Personnel”.
