At GDB, we're typically known for being a guide dog school. But did you know we also offer a free Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Immersion Program? O&M skills are essential for people who are blind or visually impaired, including those that have guide dogs, as they promote safer, more independent travel. Not only do clients receive individualized instruction, we also provide meals and lodging, low vision assessments, psychological services, and so much more. October is Blindness Awareness Month. We recognize that blindness is a spectrum. It's estimated that only 18% of people who are visually impaired are totally blind, according to the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB). More often, it’s loss of central or peripheral vision, or spotted/blurred vision as the result of disease, injury to the eye, or an inherited or congenital condition. Even people who can’t see anything at all may have the ability to perceive some light. Central Vision Loss Caused by damage to the macula. Located at the back of the eye, the macula is a tiny and extremely light-sensitive part of the retina that provides color and fine detail. Macular degeneration is a condition that affects this portion of the eye. Peripheral Vision Loss (Tunnel Vision) Diseases or injuries affecting other parts of the retina will obstruct the peripheral field of vision, sometimes constricting it so much that it is like viewing the world through a pinhole. Glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa are two common eye diseases that can result in tunnel vision. Spotted/Blurred Vision Various circumstances affect the entire field of vision, producing symptoms that result in spotted, distorted, blurred or double vision. Diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of pre-maturity, and injuries to the eye can cause such symptoms. These conditions may result in a random loss of a part of the visual field or in a loss of all of it, resulting in total blindness. This post contains three versions of the same image of a yellow Lab puppy and a black Lab puppy seated shoulder to shoulder. In each photo, the image is obscured to simulate the three types of vision loss described above. #GuideDogsForTheBlind #LowVision #Blindness #DisabilityAwareness #BlindnessAwareness
