Take Heart: Embrace AHA's Essential 8™ This World Heart Day By Sanjay Doddamani, MD As a Cardiologist, I often look to the literature from the American Heart Association (AHA) that reinforces better heart health and prevention. So this World Heart Day being observed on September 29th is an opportunity to remind ourselves about the impact of the Life's Essential 8™. It’s “Your Heart, Your Future,” with eight actionable steps that focus on simple yet impactful lifestyle changes everyone can make to protect and enhance their heart health. Whether for you or a loved on. It’s vital to life and better living! Essential Steps to Heart Health: -Eat Smart, Stay Healthy: Begin with a balanced diet of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Cut back on red meat, sugars, and processed foods to reduce heart disease risks. -Get Active Every Day: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise weekly. Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can boost your heart function without the need for intense workouts. -Maintain a Healthy Weight: Tackle heart disease risks by managing your weight through diet and regular exercise, especially if you carry extra weight around your abdomen. -Control Cholesterol Levels: Keep arteries clear by eating fiber-rich foods, reducing saturated fats, and staying active. Regular cholesterol screenings will guide your management strategies. -Manage Blood Pressure: Regular check-ups are vital as high blood pressure often shows no symptoms. Reduce salt intake, stay active, and manage stress to maintain healthy levels. -Lower Blood Sugar: Reduce sugar intake and focus on complex carbohydrates to help manage diabetes risks and regulate blood sugar effectively. -Quit Smoking: Dropping this habit can swiftly decrease your heart disease risks, with continued improvements over time. -Ensure Quality Sleep and Manage Stress: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep and keep stress at bay with mindfulness or yoga to support heart health.
