At the October 3, 2024, Guilford County Board of Commissioners meeting, Chairman Melvin “Skip” Alston issued a heartfelt statement thanking county staff and community members for their critical support to Western North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. “Our hearts and prayers are with our friends and families in the western part of the state as they face the devastation from this unprecedented disaster,” Alston said. “Several of our departments have already been activated, including Public Health, Law Enforcement, and Emergency Services, and we are in constant communication with State Emergency Management partners to ensure our communities get the assistance they need.” Chairman Alston continued, “Thank you to all who have stepped up to help. I am proud of how Guilford County has come together in this time of crisis, and we stand ready to support our western counties as they recover and rebuild. If you wish to contribute to the relief efforts, please visit NCDPS.gov/Helene to donate.” After Chairman Alston's remarks, District 3 Commissioner Pat Tillman shared a firsthand account of the devastation in the area and selfless service being provided by volunteers and support personnel. Tillman's NC National Guard unit is currently deployed to western North Carolina.
