Jay Schwedelson brought the encouragement I didn't know I needed with the #DoThisNotThat podcast last week!
It's all about Imposter Syndrome and let me tell you something - if you don't struggle with this, you know someone who does. I have a saying that I heard/read somewhere, "Do it scared." And I think of it all the time. Because this is something I struggle with.
I have been afraid of failure for most of my life. Because success was everything. And not being good at something has led to some pretty dark and sometimes foolish outcomes. The energy I have wasted on unimportant facades. Did you know that I have some pour paint projects that I have unopened in the box because the idea that I will waste them because I don't know what I am doing is too much to bear?!? It's just silly.
But the good news is that I am surrounded by literally the best people I can possibly know. The team I work with is SO smart, empathetic, and helpful. People like Jay, who have this *knowing* and share without hesitation. These are the people whose rising tide lifts all boats.
I also think about Brené Brown who once said, "If you are not in the arena getting your ass kicked on occasion, I am not interested in or open to your feedback. There are a million cheap seats in the world today filled with people who will never be brave with their own lives, but will spend every ounce of energy they have hurling advice and judgement at those of us trying to dare greatly. Their only contributions are criticism, cynicism, and fear-mongering. If you're criticizing from a place where you're not also putting yourself on the line, I'm not interested in your feedback."
Do it scared, friends. As I move into the end of the year, I have some lofty things I have committed to. But you know what is at the top of my list? A pour over paint project. Stay tuned for the results.
