At the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings, GZERO's Tony Maciulis spoke about the global economic outlook with World Bank Deputy Chief Economist M. Ayhan Kose. Watch their conversation here.
In a 1954 speech, Dwight Eisenhower said, “I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.” In a wide-ranging interview with GZERO Media's Tony Maciulis, I explained the "urgent and important" need for donor countries to contribute to the International Development Association (IDA), the part of the World Bank that helps low-income countries. A historic reversal is underway for IDA countries. Over 2020-24, average per capita incomes in half of IDA countries—the largest share since the start of this century—have been growing more slowly than those of wealthy economies. I also answered Tony’s pertinent questions on the BRICS Summit and how the escalation of the Middle East conflict could affect oil markets. The bottom line is that, given the widening economic and geopolitical divide, we need more, not less, international cooperation to overcome the global challenges.
