Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls works to accelerate and broaden access to decent, affordable housing in Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Turner Counties. Starting in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in Southern Georgia, the Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in nearly 1,400 communities throughout the U.S. and in nearly 70 countries. As the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International since 1989, Habitat Sioux Falls has built or rehabilitated 163 homes and completed 178 critical home repair projects. Habitat homeowners help build or repair their homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Sales of donated household materials at the ReStore help build an additional two homes each year and keep over 482 tons of reusable material out of the landfill. Through donating, volunteering or adding their voice, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. MasterBrand, Inc. team members came together this week to sponsor a veteran NR project! Volunteers included local and national MasterBrand staff, many of whom were also veterans. We were delighted to find out one of our Habitat homeowners from 2007 was part of the group, as well. In just two days the team replaced shingles, painted the home and installed new countertops. It was a pleasure helping Chuck and Joann, and we're thankful for Chuck's service to our country!
Last week we recognized the first recipients of the John Homstad Volunteer of the Year award - Steve and Kaye Cook! Steve's parents helped found the Greater Sioux Falls Habitat affiliate, and Steve and Kaye have been volunteering with us ever since. From building homes to deconstructing them, they've done it all (in matching t-shirts). We appreciate their kindness, selflessness and dedication to get the job done! Please join us in congratulating and thanking them. This award was created in memory of John Homstad, a longtime volunteer Master's Builder who passed away from cancer last year. It will be awarded yearly to individuals, groups and organizations that go above and beyond, advocate for Habitat and demonstrate leadership as John did during his time with us. We are honored to give this award on his behalf.
