This home, built by San Gabriel Valley Habitat volunteers, staff and the homeowner in 2023, was one of thousands destroyed by recent wildfires in California. San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles have been actively supporting the impacted communities through collecting and distributing essential supplies and furnishings, and providing knowledge and expertise to local residents. These two Habitat affiliates are committed to long-term recovery and will work with these communities every step of the way. #ReBUILDLA

Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

The results from Habitat for Humanity's integrated approach to our Aging in Place program revealed happier, healthier older adults who were able to safely age in the communities of their choice. Through a strategic approach that includes the CAPABLE model, developed by The Johns Hopkins University, we innovated this work by pairing our home repairs with health care and community services for a holistic, person-centered approach. With such clear gains, we created the Bridging the Gap guide to help Habitat affiliates and our fellow housing organizations to successfully implement this approach. The guide breaks down Aging in Place strategies and the CAPABLE model into clear, explicit steps to connect your home repair and home modification work with the health care sector to holistically address the unique needs of each older adult you serve.

At Habitat for Humanity, we know that a family should never have to spend more than 30% of their income on a home. Yet 1 in 3 families in the U.S. is above this threshold on housing costs. Through #HabitatVoicesInAction, local and state Habitat organizations have been uniting with partners, community members and volunteers to successfully advocate for housing policy changes that will improve access to affordable homes for millions of people across the United States. It is critical to address issues of home affordability at scale and this is why housing policies are so vital. 🏘️

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?’” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, as Habitat for Humanity continues our work to achieve Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community, Habitat affiliates in the U.S. are driving initiatives that bridge differences, foster housing equity and empower neighborhoods. These projects enable communities to come together to create sustainable solutions that have the principles of the Beloved Community at their core. #MLKDay

Meeting residents where they are is an important first step to helping them improve the places they call home. Peruvians, for example, tend to build incrementally and tend to trust word-of-mouth recommendations more than official certifications, so Habitat’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter partnered with a local developer to create a coalition of trusted builders, a program known as Guardian Constructor. Learn how the coalition has already connected 4,000 families with vetted construction professionals in its first two years of existence. https://lnkd.in/eguJhGNE
