The rebound in China/Hong Kong stock markets at the end of September was driven by a policy combination, including but not limited to rate cuts, RRR reductions, mortgage policy relaxations, and new monetary policy tools to support stock market development, surpassing market expectations. In HSVM CIO Wilfred Sit latest article, he shared his insights on these policies. #HangSengInvestment #HSVM #Investment #CIOMarketInsights #China *Investments involve risks. I took a leave in late Sep and many things happened during the time with the Fed cutting rates by 50bp and Mainland China issuing a portfolio of policies which pushed up both the onshore and offshore equity markets. In this article, we summarized and shared our thoughts on the policies announced. I look at the recent situation from 3 aspects: (1) The backdrop of Fed cuts. More aggressive cuts than expected is in general positive to Asian assets and give room to more easing policies by Asian authorities. However I have doubts if inflation would soften faster than expected and with the underlying US economy remaining resilient, rate cuts may not need to be as aggressive as the market wants. Presidential election also poses another uncertainty — especially a Trump presidency is likely to be inflationary. (2) The monetary policies such as RRR and rate cuts and property policies are meant to lower borrowing costs to support the economy and / or the property market but whether there is loan demand amid a deleveraging environment is the key. (3) Capital market policies to facilitate share buybacks and obtain funding backed by collaterals to invest into equities do support and excite the equity markets. How this is implemented and executed remains to be watched while market has already shot up. On overall basis, both the onshore and offshore markets are not expensive even after the sharp rebound, though not dirt cheap anymore. We need to see improvements in economic data in China and a global easing environment led by the US to continue. In the interview with NOW TV FINTERVIEW, our CIO Wilfred Sit, offers insights on the recent market volatility in HK equities. He believes that the Chinese government will likely implement more fiscal spending measures, and the central government may issue bonds and redistribute funding to local governments. Wilfred also notes that the valuation of HK equities remains low. This asset class has low correlation to global markets, making it a diversification tool for investors. #HangSengInvestment #HSVM #CIOMarketInsight #HKEquities *Investments involve risks.
