🎃 Happy Halloween! 🎃 In the spirit of spooky surprises, let’s talk about the frightening risks of poor vapor intrusion data. Skipping quality checks can lead to flawed risk assessments with serious consequences! At Hart & Hickman, quality is our priority in our site investigations. From selecting the right laboratory and rigorously leak-testing canisters and flow controllers to conducting thorough pre-sampling surveys for indoor sources, our team focuses on collecting reliable, high-quality vapor intrusion data at every step. These detailed procedures are critical to collecting representative data to accurately assess potential human health risks and mitigation costs at impaired properties. 👻 Don’t let poor quality data spook your results – trust Hart & Hickman for quality that counts 🧛♀️!

H&H is working with a developer to safely revitalize land historically used as a municipal landfill in the 1950s and 1960s. As part of the future building’s deep foundation system, piles were recently driven through over 20 feet of debris consisting of plastic, wood, paper, glass, and metal. In addition to the unique geotechnical challenges, proper management of soil, groundwater, and landfill gas will be critical to the safe redevelopment of this property under the North Carolina Brownfields Program. #EnvironmentalAssessment #VaporIntrusion #Brownfields

With the close of the public comment period on October 15, 2024, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has established eight interim maximum allowable concentrations (IMACs) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under 15A NCAC 02L .0202. The new IMACs can be found on DEQ’s website: https://lnkd.in/ex3R-SUf
Through October 15, 2024, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is accepting public comments prior to establishing eight interim maximum allowable concentrations (IMACs) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under 15A NCAC 02L .0202. There are currently no DEQ NCAC 02L Groundwater Quality Standards for PFAS; however, EPA has established National Primary Drinking Water Regulation Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS in drinking water, including individual MCLs for PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS, PFOS, and HFPO-DA (a.k.a. GenX), and a Hazard Index-based MCL which considers the combined toxicity of PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS, and HFPO-DA. The EPA MCLs and proposed DEQ IMACs are provided in the table below. More information can be found on DEQ’s website. https://lnkd.in/eDVTqevf

Groundwater assessment strategies shouldn't be deterred by vegetation challenges! Although a tough spot for a 300 ft Type III bedrock monitoring well, Hart & Hickman and Geologic Exploration made it work. Cased deep into bedrock, the well targets water-producing fractures below 275 ft to delineate the downgradient extent of a PFAS plume in Piedmont geology. #EnvironmentalAssessment #PFAS
