International medical graduates (IMGs), or those who graduated from a medical school located outside the U.S. and Canada, now make up a quarter of all licensed physicians in the U.S. They have been shown to specialize in primary care at a higher rate than their U.S. medical graduate counterparts, especially in underserved areas across the country. However, their citizenship status, which differentially affects their ability to enter and remain in the U.S. after medical school, can impact which specialties they enter and where they ultimately practice medicine. A new study led by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute research fellow Tarun Ramesh suggests that policy interventions aimed at recruiting physicians to specialize in primary care, especially to practice in underserved areas, should be tailored to IMG citizenship status. Finding sound strategies to meet the growing demand for #primarycare, especially in underserved areas, is an ongoing #publichealth challenge among policymakers. A new study led by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and published in the Journal of General Internal medicine, the official journal of Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), evaluated the effects of citizenship status on physician specialty choice and practice location among U.S. citizen and noncitizen international medical graduates (IMGs), which account for a quarter of all active physicians in the U.S. Citizenship status has significant effects on IMGs’ choices of specialties and practice locations. Though noncitizen IMGs were historically found to be more likely to specialize in primary care and work in rural areas and shortage areas, the proportion has declined over the past decade. 💡 Lead author Tarun Ramesh, senior author Hao Yu, and co-authors suggest that strategies to recruit physicians to specialize in primary care, and especially to practice in underserved areas, should be tailored to the unique characteristics of IMGs. ➡ Read their work here: https://lnkd.in/dRcB3eyc

For nearly five decades, the Nurses’ Health Study has investigated the risk factors for the most prevalent chronic diseases in women and thousands of scientific articles have drawn on its data. The study may come to an untimely end if additional funding is not secured soon. https://bit.ly/4h3AEx3

It was an outstanding discussion about the role of #HIEs in population health research in our session at the Annual #Civitas2024 Conference in Detroit. It was an honor moderating this panel with 3 national leaders who have led the movement for local trust, multistakeholder governance, and completeness of health data in their respective regions. Grateful to the packed audience that engaged in great follow up Q&A. Our pilot of using a common data model across multiple HIEs, in a distributed network, is a first step in this journey.
