About us

Harvard Square Homeless Shelter is a student-run homeless shelter operating out of the basement of University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square. We serve 24 guests every night throughout the five coldest months of winter, and offer them street outreach, resource advocacy, and work contract programs. We strive to provide our guests with resources and services that will help them successfully transition into housing. In the meantime, we work to ensure a sense of dignity that is often absent when people have been maltreated or stigmatized because of their housing status.

Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) needs volunteers! 🏡🥗 HSHS serves local adults experiencing homelessness. They welcome individuals and small groups to volunteer alongside Harvard student-volunteers during dinner, evening, overnight, or breakfast shifts. No prior experience is needed. Shifts start October 15th, with overnight and breakfast coverage most needed. The shelter is located at 66 Winthrop St., in the basement of the University Lutheran Church. • HSHS has historically been a short-term emergency shelter with a congregate sleeping space, but these walls that Byggmeister generously installed are one of many steps in our comprehensive remodel as we shift to offering longer-term stays (and helping our guests meet longer-term goals). We have long hoped to address the challenges that come with living in a congregate space, from limited privacy to insufficient personal storage space, and we can't thank Byggmeister enough for their help in making this urgently needed change possible! In the spring, DOME Sleep Pods with be installed in between these walls! HSHS is currently fundraising for these pods and is excited to announce that we have a matching donor for all donations made up to $50,000. Donations can be made at https://lnkd.in/eyExwwY4.

This flurry of activity brought to you by our recent project with the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter. With Byggmeister's help, the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter is converting existing dormitory-style housing to semi-private units. The Harvard Square Homeless Shelter provides 24 unhoused individuals at a time with a safe, clean, and caring place to stay November through April. In the video above, team Byggmeister built and installed the walls that will hold Dome Pods (Perkins&Will), a modular, unitized system specifically designed for interim and emergency housing.
