When Donica Kaneshiro, our communications consultant, started to renovate her home in Kaimuki, the top of her wish list was taking steps to decrease the heat without running the air conditioner constantly. Fortunately, there were energy-saving home-renovation ideas on our website at https://lnkd.in/g8Pniinj. Donica replaced her roof with light colored, sun-reflecting shingles. She immediately felt the temperature drop even with the summer sun bearing down on her house. She also stayed away from dark colored paint for both interior and exterior walls to help amplify the indoor lighting and reflect the sun's heating rays away from her home. In addition, she opted to swap out her single wall for insulated double walls to keep cold air inside when she uses the AC on hot and humid days. She replaced aging exterior doors with newer versions that have tighter weather seals to prevent cold air from leeching out. When replacing the windows, she opted for argon-filled double-paned glass, as the dense argon gas helps to insulate the house better and keeps window temperatures close to that of the room inside. She also added a couple more windows to really maximize the effects of the tradewinds and increase natural light in the living room and kitchen areas.
