Scholarship season is fast approaching, and applications to the Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s scholarships are scheduled to open on December 12, 2024.
Changes to the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process have led to a decrease in completion rates among high school seniors nationwide, with Hawai’i experiencing one of the largest declines. HCF, which manages a long-standing postsecondary scholarship program, relies on FAFSA completion to gauge college affordability, particularly for low-income students. FAFSA completion is crucial for accessing financial aid and scholarships that make higher education more affordable.
To address these concerns for the 2025-2026 FAFSA application cycle, HCF is partnering with community-based organizations to enhance awareness and increase FAFSA completion rates.
In August 2024, HCF awarded $133,789 in grants to nine Hawai’i nonprofits. Please help us in applauding the following organizations:
50CAN’s local team, Hawai‘i Kids CAN
Boys & Girls Club of Hawaiʻi
The Bridge: Kaua'i To College
Chaminade University of Honolulu
Hana Arts
Hawaiʻi Theatre Center
Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony Association
ʻIolani School
Laupahoehoe Train Museum

When part of Maui is hurting, the rest of the community redoubles its support. Even the youth take part–as seen in the laudable actions of the students of Seabury Hall’s National Honor Society and Art with Heart clubs, in response to the devastation of the Maui fires.
The Seabury Hall National Honor Society of the independent, 400-student day school in Makawao held a musubi sale to raise money for the Maui Strong Fund, featuring a recipe passed down from one NHS members’ grandmother.
Art with Heart, a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping its community through the arts, is a service club that’s been a part of the Seabury Hall Performing Arts Program for over a decade. Having chosen the Maui Strong Fund as this year’s Art with Heart beneficiary, its members put on a one-night show at the ‘A‘ali‘ikūhonua Creative Arts Center.
We are tremendously humbled by the generosity and support the students of Seabury Hall have shown to the people and placed affected by the August 2023 Maui wildfires.

Water is the most essential source of human life. It hydrates us, keeps us healthy, and cleans our bodies. Water sustains global food systems, economies, and environments. Without it, our families and communities cannot thrive.
Today, the US Water Alliance asks us to “Imagine a Day Without Water”, and we’d like to know:
𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞?
The Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Fresh Water Initiative is designed to pro-actively address and resolve water supply issues. In order to tackle this important issue, HCF has convened stakeholders from all sides of the issue—agriculture, private landowners, scientists, and government officials—all working to implement a strong, proactive agenda to protect Hawai‘i’s fresh water future, and avoid costly problems down the road.
The Blueprint for Action lays a foundation for a sustainable water future for our state with a goal of providing 100 million gallons a day of additional reliable fresh water supply by 2030. Thus far it has helped support and pass 13 key state and county policy actions that will improve Hawai‘i’s ability to capture, reuse, and store fresh water—making us all a little more secure.
In 2024, HCF launched the Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center, a Category 2 – Regional Water Infrastructure EFC with BIL funding, to support long-term water sustainability and water infrastructure resilience across the state of Hawai‘i.
